Can't confirm - I just tried on Sonoma 23D56 and it works normally for me, with 2.3.0 alpha intel Wifi driver for AC9560 (and ethernet unplugged on my Z390 Designare). I use an original 3rd gen AirPort Time Capsule for storage though.
The problem is not specific to OpenWRT. I've tested in another network, and tried to back up to a Mac instead of SMB share on a router and got the same failure. The next step is to check whether it is specific to 8265.
@usr-sse2 I think it is not specific to 8265. Maybe macOS some userspace applications/daemons don't treat that the network is UP. Sonoma AirportItlwm implement is different from BRCMs, the network traffic is through to Ethernet interface which should be SkywalkNetworkInterface(although it is the subclass of Ethernet interface) on Sonoma. , the ioreg difference is here:
I'm having the same problem with Sonoma 14.7, AX200

Environment
Description I have a Samba share on an OpenWRT router that was used as Time Machine backup destination. It used to work on Ventura, then I haven't used it for a long time because the HDD became full. Now I've upgraded to Sonoma and replaced the HDD on the router with a larger one, and I can no longer backup to it over Wi-Fi using AirportItlwm. I can setup the network backup destination successfully, but the initial backup doesn't start with a "network interruption" error, although the Wi-Fi does not disconnect. I've checked that backup to the same network destination works when using a wired Ethernet connection. If I do initial backup over Ethernet, then incremental backups over Wi-Fi also don't work.
I think that it may be related to the problem with iMessage and it may be easier to debug Time Machine than iMessage because you can control both sides of the connection.
Here is the error log of backupd:
