Per the needs assessment survey:
Are there any challenges to expressing the importance of these circumvention tools?
- "I frequently find myself lacking good graphics and printed materials for the metaphors I used in trainings. "
Would you consider using a tool like this to assess trainee’s ability to use specific tools?
- NO: ...cybercircumvention tools are generally plug-and-play in the sense that you download and run it, and either it works or it doesn't--there isn't much to learn/train/test/evaluate.
- NO: ...cybercensored netizens are generally already familiar with the concept of cybercircumvention. They don't need to be shown anything; they just need to be given a working tool, and off they go.
what would be the most important feature that you would need to use a tool in this manner?
- Good user-facing explanatory materials about what is being simulated.
- Pedagogical consideration of which environments stimulate learning which ones encourage rote memorisation of a technical trick.
- A dashboard where connections blocked are visualised, so that people can try on their computers and see on the projector that they are (not getting through). Colours like green and red would make it extremely clear.
- A lot of scaffolding to help people understand what IP addresses are and similar concepts about Internet infrastructure seems like it would be useful.
- Anything that gives users visible feedback on what they're doing -- like an encrypted email program showing you the encrypted gobbledygook -- will definitely give users a feeling of reassurance.
What would prevent you from using an environment like this for your trainings?
- I would need to have an interface I can easily use. This doesn't mean a graphical interface necessarily, but to have an a selectable menu on the console would be great.
