Big picture: What questions might one like to answer with this data #5

Hi all,

Alex has done some great visualizations, showing what Tableau can do for us with this data; I would like to back up a wee bit and do an exercise I did in my visualization class. Without worrying about what the visualization might look like, please chime in on this thread with any brainstorming ideas: What questions might we like to answer with this data?

These brainstorming questions can be very aspirational, and might even include data we don't have in hand right now; they might be 'too much work' to implement for this election cycle; they might be entirely impractical for other reasons. But all of it will be helpful to the longer term project for thinking about what our goals are in this space.

What would you like to know about (Portland) (mayoral) campaign financing? (Note that some of this doesn't even involve visualizations. Like maineballot.org, some of it might just be informational.)

I will try to capture some of the things we've talked about as a start...

What are the reporting requirements for Portland mayoral candidates?

congdon commented 5 years ago

What percentage of contributions in dollars for each candidate are from small donors vs. large donors ($50 threshold)

Same thing, but the number of contributions, vs. the total dollars.

congdon commented 5 years ago

Where do this candidates contributors live? ... looking at dollar amounts for different regions ... looking at the number of people for different regions

congdon commented 5 years ago

(Questions about financing for candidates who've now dropped out... I don't have a clear picture at the moment of what these questions might be)

congdon commented 5 years ago

We might like to look at the employers of contributors, maybe also on a gross categorization such as employer size, self, unemployed, student sort of thing.

(In at least our first-pass project, maybe we want to have a comment form, where people could suggest other things they'd like to know. Or yeah, just give us feedback.)

How many people donate to multiple campaigns? How to people realign when candidates drop out?
