Files do not show in the File Manager app #1787

Open JHuberman opened 3 years ago

JHuberman commented 3 years ago

Steps to reproduce

1.save ocad file and choose to save it omap format in the default directory offered by the dialog box 2.go to "android/data/org.openorienteering.mapper/files (the location of the original ocad file)

  1. File isn't there 4.attempt to find where file was saved

Actual behaviour

the file is not there

Expected behaviour

The file should show so I can copy it to my computer

Configuration

Mapper Version:0.9. 4 Operating System: android Samsung Galaxy Tab smt540

Hovering over the active file in the opening screen shows the path "/data/user/0/org.openorienteering.mapper/files/GOv1.omap Hovering over the file in the opening screen file list shows the path "/data/data/org.openorienteering.mapper/files/GOv1.omap I can't find these directories

The problem arose when I saved an ocad file and it offered saving in omap format. Instead of choosing a directory I assumed that it would save in the same directory - but it didn't - it saved in the unfindable directory.

It would be helpful if there was a "save as" option maybe with a long press of the "save" icon.

I repeated the process and chose a folder I created and it was saved where I expected in the folder I chose.

I don't want to loose the work I did on the "unaccessible" file

Thanks for reporting this issue. Well, in fact we don't actively offer these dialogs on Android because they do not work satisfyingly.

Anyway, I was able to reproduce the issue. a) I can find the saved file by searching with the device's file manager. b) Generally, the org.openorienteering.mapper folders are in the Android/data folders on each volume (internal storage, SD card).

What file manager are you using. My whole file system is above a "tablet" icon, and the directory that OOM is using is below that and I can't get to it. I have established the proper directories, but would like to recover the "hidden" file.

A device restart may help to mitigate some issues related to Android media scanning. (But this is more relevant for claimed issues of file corruption which IMO go down to the media manager still reporting the old file size when the actual file had grown.)

Did you have some success? As I said, I can reproduce triggering the unexpected dialog, but I also can find what was saved succesfully.

Thanks for your continued interest in my difficulty getting started. I have abandoned the files that are hiding in the root directory. One of my friends will look for them from a Linux file manager and believes he will find the directories, but that is more for intellectual curiosity rather than need.

I have been having great success with my current mapping work. There is a pretty steep learning curve to start mapping even though I have been orienteering since 1978. Besides the logistical problems of keeping track of files and importing property boundaries from the county, I have to master the art of seeing the terrain the way it should look on the map. I got a set of rocks mapped so that it looked great until I realized I was probably mapping at a 1:1000 scale and thus unrecognizable at 1:10,000. I changed it to a small boulder field.

I am also trying to document some of the features in the Android app that aren't mentioned and hope that I can make it easier for others to begin field work with tablets.

If you know of any additional documentation for the Android app besides the manual please let me know. The instructions to use double clicks or ctrl+ or shift+ key strokes don't have options in the Android app, although I have discovered that some of the buttons take their place.
