Can't add Canon MG4120 anymore (cups-filters 1.20.0) #22

Closed P3p1t0 closed 4 years ago

P3p1t0 commented 6 years ago

I use Print Setting (system-config-printer) in order to add printers.

When I try to add my printer by automatic detection, it just fails with "server-error-internal-error". Normally, it should add my printer and use driverless for printing. This GUI tool always chooses driverless by default when you use automatic detection; it doesn't let you choose between driverless and something else.

It worked perfectly with previous of cups-filters, including 1.18.0 and 1.19.0. I got this issue when I updated to 1.20.0. I could add my printer and use driverless for it with previous versions of cups-filters.

A workaround I found in order to add my printer with system-config-printer is to manually add the printer, then manually select Gutenprint. Trying to add the printer manually with driverless instead of Gutenprint results in the same error I get when I try to add it by automatic detection.

Trying to add the printer with the Web interface (localhost:631) using driverless ends up with an error too : "unable to add error : unable to copy PPD file." However, adding the printer with the Web interface using Gutenprint works fine.

Here's a typical log output from /var/log/cups/error_log I get when I try to add my printer with driverless in general.

E [04/Feb/2018:20:58:30 -0500] [cups-deviced] PID 5959 (gutenprint52+usb) stopped with status 1!

Hope you can do something about it.

Reported about the issue on Manjaro forum https://forum.manjaro.org/t/stable-update-2018-02-03-kernels-libreoffice-browsers-thunderbird-php-haskell/39663/68 https://forum.manjaro.org/t/testing-update-2018-02-08-kernels-browsers-plasma-gcc-nvidia-systemd/40022/29 https://forum.manjaro.org/t/testing-update-2018-02-15-kernels-firefox-dev-bluez-haskell-python/40450/13

My config Manjaro Cinnamon 17.1.5 (Testing branch, issue noticed on Stable branch too) Canon Pixma MG4120 wireless printer (using Avahi for mDNS zeroconf and service discovery, which is compatible with my printer for Wi-Fi printing) CUPS 2.2.6 cups-filters 1.20.0 (worked fine with previous version such as 1.18.0 and 1.19.0) system-config-printer 1.5.11 (had the same issue with 1.5.9)

@tillkamppeter Calling driverless does not work correctly for me:

driverless: symbol lookup error: driverless: undefined symbol: get_printer_attributes_log

Edit: see how I built it: https://gist.github.com/Esokrates/96a96c555e85aa50ec48f5b9d848e640 Ubuntu 19.10 is fully upgraded, no third party packages.

Edit2: Before compiling master, ie with the default ubuntu packages, the output was as following:

user@computer:~$ driverless
ipp://AE8C5A000000.local:631/ipp/printer
user@computer:~$ driverless ipp://AE8C5A000000.local:631/ipp/printer
ERROR: Unable to create PPD file: Printer does not support required IPP attributes or document formats.
tillkamppeter commented 4 years ago

@Esokrates, the error shows that you have a library mismatch, most probably the driverless of cups-filters 1.26.0 is used and the libcupsfilters of an older version of cups-filters. Make sure that you have nowhere old library versions installed, for example from Ubuntu packages. A package built from source often gets installed in /usr/local/... but there is then the distribution-provided library in /usr/.... Try to build with ./configure --prefix=/usr. You can also test by getting into the source directory of cups-filters and (after make) run

./driverless ipp://AE8C5A000000.local:631/ipp/printer

The the driverless utility is launched through a wrapper script taking the correct library from the source directory instead of from the system.

Esokrates commented 4 years ago

@tillkamppeter Thanks for the fast reply. I overwrote the files provided by the packages as removing the lib packages was not possible without removing everything cups related:

sudo cp /usr/lib/libcupsfilters.so.1 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcupsfilters.so.1
sudo cp /usr/lib/libcupsfilters.so.1.0.0 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcupsfilters.so.1.0.0

Adding the printer then worked successfully as well as printing a test page. However the page format is wrong, see the test page (which is an A4 paper): IMG_20191222_175546

@Esokrates, the generates PPD has 4x6 paper selected by default. You need to set the default paper size to A4, then the printer should print correctly (full size) on A4 paper.

Esokrates commented 4 years ago

@tillkamppeter I noticed that and set the default paper size to A4 in gnome-settings: Screenshot from 2019-12-22 22-11-44 but it still prints the small testpage, so there seems to be a bug. However when printing other documents, the scaling is right :-). The margins are too big (not dramatically, but 1 cm off for sure) though and there is no option to configure that unfortunately. When printing a normal A4 pdf page, the bottom is cropped off, so I have to select "shrink to fit" and then the margins are too big.

tillkamppeter commented 4 years ago

@Esokrates, I have done a small change now (commit 4deb48ed1) which should solve your problem. Please try. It should solve the margins, not the default paper size. For the defult paper size you should check in the printer's web admin interface.

Esokrates commented 4 years ago

@tillkamppeter Tested it, works perfectly now, margins are congruent with the printout from a windows pc. Kudos for that! Thanks very much!

Regarding the default paper size: Neither the web interface nor the printer directly show any configuration option for paper size so I couldn't alter anything. Shouldn't the test page simply respect the settings which are configured in control center? Would be great if this could be addressed too as this might lead to confusion.

tillkamppeter commented 4 years ago

Thanks for confirming that my change solved your problem. What you can do for the default paper size is to override it on your local machine, by setting A4 as default in a printer setup tool (GNOME Control Center, system-config-printer, CUPS web interface, or command lpadmin -p <YOUR PRINTER> -o PageSize=A4). I am closing this issue here as I have confirmation now that the recent fixes and improvements for printers which do not support IPP get-printer-attributes requests with attributes "all" and "media-col-database" make the printers work, especially the Canons which made @P3p1t0 start this thread and an additional manufacturer (Fuji Xerox),

Esokrates commented 4 years ago

@tillkamppeter Thanks very much for your great work and support. I see this issue as closed too. Just to avoid confusion let me state what the problem regarding the size is in my eyes, as your last comment gives me the feeling that there is a bit of a misunderstanding.

What you can do for the default paper size is to override it on your local machine, by setting A4 as default in a printer setup tool (GNOME Control Center, ...

This is exactly what I did but the test page is still small, so it seems the test page is not respecting those settings! This is a minor issue, but it would be nice if this could be addressed as well. Could you tell me where I should report this bug against?

Thanks very much and merry Christmas!

tillkamppeter commented 4 years ago

If it is only the test page and you are able to print otherwise, I think it is all OK for your printing. It is only somewhat strange for uses setting up such a printer for the first time. I can have a look when you attach the PPD file to this issue as it is now. Did you create a permanent print queue for this printer or do you let cups-browsed auto-create a queue for it? In this case your will find your printer's queue name in the output of lpstat -v at least as long as the printer is connected and turned on. Run the command

lpadmin -p <PRINTER QUEUE NAME> -o PageSize=A4

replacing <PRINTER QUEUE NAME> by your printer's queue name. Now run

lpoptions -p <PRINTER QUEUE NAME> -l

again using your printer's queue name and post the output here. Especially this should show an asterisk (*) at the A4 entry in the list of page sizes. Now run the command

lp -d <PRINTER QUEUE NAME> /usr/share/cups/data/testprint

Does a correct A4 test page come out?

I simply added the printer in gnome-control-center by just clicking "Add", selecting the printer and everything else worked automatically thanks to your work.

Run the command

I did

Now run

No, still the tiny test page unfortunately.
