2023 Website and content priorities

Let's use this issue to discuss content, feature, and maintenance priorities for 2021 (and beyond). Here's an outline based on what we've discussed. We can flesh it out and prioritize in the comments -

2020 Angel City Jazz Fest live replays https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/33

• [ ] determine a day / time to livestream each week
• [ ] determine the start and end date
• [ ] determine platform(s) and process for airing and archiving livestreams (i.e. do we livestream for free + continue to offer on Vimeo VOD?)
• [ ] brainstorm on how to promote and monetize the events
• [ ] create event pages (we could probably just change the dates and repurpose the old ones)
• [ ] estimate time required to accomplish all of the above

2021 Angel City Jazz Fest

• [x] determine if we'd need design changes, sections or landing pages, or new features for the 2021 fest; estimate costs
• [x] make sure 2020 videos are in the archives https://angelcityjazz.com/watch/
• [x] create event pages
• [x] swap out events and relevant info on the landing page https://angelcityjazz.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/
• [x] brainstorm on how to promote and monetize the events

Website hosting & maintenance

• [ ] renew Bluehost or re-evalute hosting options
• [ ] decide if/when to renew licenses for paid plugins

@roccosomazzi Above is the first stab at 2021 priorities. I separated out the hosting and maintenance as I'm assuming (hoping) the budget for hosting and paid plugins is separate from the 1k you've preliminarily budgeted for the website work.

The 1k budget equates to about 15 hrs time that needs to be allocated across web priorities. Ideally, we can generate additional budget to spend on new features, PR and marketing through the live replays.

Are there any other content priorities or feature requests you're not seeing in the outline? Anything else web-related we should go over?

Hey Rocco - are you planning a Young Artist Competition this year? I guess there's not much we'd have to do w/ the current landing page if you were planning https://angelcityjazz.com/young-artist-competition/

Do you think there will be any other events (pre or post Festival) in addition to the 2020 replays? Any additional explorations https://angelcityjazz.com/explorations/ or other content ideas?

With regards to marketing - would you consider working with Fusicology if they're able to produce content and implement social media marketing strategy. I've yet to connect with them, but would be happy to reach out.

Hi Gus, sorry for the delayed response. I'm still unable to see the github page. I always end up with the attached screenshot and I;m unable to control my email settings. I'm not planning to do the competition this year and there will be no other events before the fest. I'm hoping to be able to do a few more LACreators posts in the next few months.

Is this mainly because you don't have time to coordinate yourself? Would it be doable if you had help? No need to go deep on the topic in this issue. Just trying to get a feel for what tweaks we'd make to the landing page https://angelcityjazz.com/young-artist-competition/

And should I assume we're still moving forward with the 2020 replays (I hope so!). If yes, I'll add some thoughts/recommendations on timing and promotion spurred on by recent developments on the platform and web services side https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/33 In short - June could be a very good time to start!

I'm going to followup w/ you on some other big picture stuff in FB. Mainly because that's where we were having the convo before collaborating on the site began.

Finally - just let me know if you're still having issues w/ Github.

I think I need to rethink the competition as it's been really hard to get submissions and build excitement around it. I'd like to think of a better way to support young musicians but not sure how. Also we usually feature the winning ensemble at LACMA opening for the main act, but this year we will be presenting a large group (the Pan African People Arkestra) so that wouldn't be possible. Regarding more content and shows after the festival, I've been talking to Facebook about creating more content and they're seriously considering supporting us and financing a series of VR videos. I should know by the end of this week if it's happening. They could also help us promote the concert streams we want to do with last year's videos. Still unable to see the Github page, so at the moment I'm just reading and writing the emails that show up in my mailbox.

We're about to head out on a camping trip (I'll be off the grid until Tuesday but will be bringing my computer just in case there are any site emergencies). I'd like to lock down our content strategy next week... mainly because the platform is about to participate (https://fundoss.org/collective/openproducerplatform) in a very high profile fundraising campaign (see https://fundoss.org/blog/ for more info) and with Angel City and Just Jazz being the only live sites at the moment, there's going to be a two week period where we'll be amplifying/showcasing those sites to a very large global audience. This will generate funds that will improve the platform (improvements and new features). If we strategize we could funnel resources directly towards sustaining your org.

Just wanted to leave this comment as a heads up. I'll circle back to you on Tuesday. Hope you're having a fabulous holiday weekend!!

On a personal note - my Dad unexpectedly died on Memorial day. Without oversharing, I'll just say myself and my immediate family will come out ok (unfortunately this is not the first time I've lost a parent or sibling) - we won't have to fly cross country to Boston until probably July - it does mean that family issues will be competing for my time/headspace in the short term. I'll be able to balance both if I'm looped in and helping act on whatever priorities we're defining here.

Sorry to hear about your dad. It's about the facebook partnership I mentioned before. THey will give us $40K to produce 20 VR videos, 12 during the festival and 10 more afterwards. ALso they will support os to endure the highest production quality. This new videos will be miles ahead of last year's videos.

The latter is probably not doable for accounting reasons - but thought I'd mention as I'm going to be in fundraising mode until the fundraiser is complete.

Either way, I'll be promoting Angel City Jazz as a showcase for the platform!

Without overexplaining, I'm now thinking it would be better to split that between $250 here https://fundoss.org/collective/openproducerplatform and $250 into our other open collective. I totally understand you probably have no idea what I'm talking about so I won't explain the benefits to Angel City until 1) you verify you haven't made the donation; 2) you could split the $500 payment

I do know our little, unknown project is #4 if you sort by funding https://fundoss.org. The funds will be reinvested into the platform and Angel City Jazz will have access to some shiny new features and improvements!

Ya - so your big donation bumped us all the way to #3 out of 55 (mostly) much larger, well known projects!

We didn't have enough lead time (nor was the FundOSS team or platform really ready) to really promote Angel City, but this should be the first of many fundraisers these folks put on.

I was hoping we'd have touched base with regards to the paid plugins https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/35 and also prioritize stuff here. I'll be around tomorrow (probably not working) and then we're headed out of town through next Weds night.

Hey Rocco - Following up on our email about post-festival changes. With regards to how to archive the 2021 fest, I think it depends on if/when we'll have VR vids https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/34#issuecomment-852627737 or any type of video archives of the performances. I'm thinking we could convert the event pages and reformat them similar to the Archival Videos found on https://angelcityjazz.com/watch/. We could also add photos, audio, links to press/reviews, etc. for events that have them.

We could then replace the grid on the home and festival pages when the new archives are ready.

Similarly, I wonder if 2020 archives should follow a similar format (with the featured image/excerpt visible) just to make all archives consistent.

Those are my initial thoughts.

That seems a bit counterintuitive - so I guess we won't be able to archive any of the 2021 events in https://angelcityjazz.com/watch/

So we'll just leave the event pages as is?... at least for the time being. Would be great if we could go back and create artist pages similar to some of the examples listed on https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/3#issue-652681939 or https://www.smallslive.com/search/archive/

We could talk more about that if you had an interest and some budget.

Hey @angelcityjazz - I visited the site to do some code updates and noticed you added back the home page. It seems a bit empty without any content (aside from a button) in the top section - as mentioned in my previous comment, we could plug in something like a carousel block (https://newspack.pub/support/blocks/article-carousel-block/) if there are specific posts or events you'd like to feature.

I also noticed some weirdness with the featured image being diplayed (2x actually) above the banner on the Angel City Jazz page. I forget why the featured image was set to display (was hiding with CSS) and it must have re-appeared when you re-enabeld the other home page. Anyhow, I removed the featured image and also cleaned up some of the blocks where the text changed colors.

Everything seems to look fine now, but please let me know if you're running across any other issues.

Also let me know if there's any upcoming or recent content we can showcase as we go into the new year.

There are still some improvements I'd like to make, but the time spent already (including that time-consuming manual/automatic import) will take up almost 1/2 the budget you were able to allocate last year.

That said, I wanted to get a sense for your budget this year so we could plan accordingly.

Generally speaking, I think the site is pretty solid (even though there are additional improvements and functionality I'd like to roll in) - we're lacking a bit on the content creation and promotion side... at least in-between the yearly festival.

If you agree with that general assessment, I'd like to know if you're open to doing some fundraising so (ideally) we could spend more time on the site, marketing, and other areas where you could use some help. This could include help raising funds.

Just FYI, I'm transitioning OpenProducer from what was essentially a one person operation into an agency that should be able to accomodate any needs we idenity.

Hi Gus, I uploaded the last 3 videos on youtube and swapped them out on the website. My budget is the same as last year. In a way it will be easier as we already have the event templates. I can probably do most of the work myself. Marketing and fundraising are the hardest things to do for me as I have no one helping me. I will put together a social media campaign to promote the Oculus video soon but not sure what can do within the website.

Ok - so if we're deducting $250 for code and security updates (which I forgot to charge you for last year) + roughly 8 - 10 hours time recent work on the archives (there's still a small bit of improvements I'd like to roll in), that pretty much takes up the budget you've allocated.

In a way it will be easier as we already have the event templates. I can probably do most of the work myself.

You and/or even an intern or volunteer should be able to manage the content and make simple design/layout changes. Especially if we can provide some better documentation.

It would take additional TBD budget for custom theme/design or adding/implementing new functionality (SEO improvements, memberships, donation/subscription improvements, newsletter/marketing campaigns, etc) that would help drive traffic and donations/sales to the site.

As previously mentioned (and I forgot I also gave you a heads up via email) - OpenProducer, through the partnerships we're forming as a project of Open Collective Foundation, has additional capacity to help with marketing and fundraising.

So if you're open to having us help in those areas, I'd love to see if we can raise funds that would enable us to do more.

Definitely would work better if there was a banner w/out the year - surprised you don't have one.

Maybe we can reduce the number of videos showing in the watch block so that it balances out with the past program block.

Actually needed to add 'more' videos to balance a bit better with the other column. I took out the block of archival videos as the format doesn't quite match the others.

I still think separating out into 2 sections might work better - I'll mock up on stage next chance I get.

You and/or even an intern or volunteer should be able to manage the content and make simple design/layout changes. Especially if we can provide some better documentation.

It would take additional TBD budget for custom theme/design or adding/implementing new functionality (SEO improvements, memberships, donation/subscription improvements, newsletter/marketing campaigns, etc) that would help drive traffic and donations/sales to the site.

As previously mentioned (and I forgot I also gave you a heads up via email) - OpenProducer, through the partnerships we're forming as a project of Open Collective Foundation, has additional capacity to help with marketing and fundraising.

So if you're open to having us help in those areas, I'd love to see if we can raise funds that would enable us to do more.

FYI we're running https://justjazz.tv/ on the same platform and they're also using Open Collective (we're going to integrate into the platform so to provide a 'cheaper/better' way to take donations and run membership/subscription programs) and Open Collective Foundation as a means to take tax-deductable donations while their Just Jazz Foundation waits for their designation letter from the IRS. Another benefit of working with Open Collective/Open Collective Foundation is they've grown quite a bit over the past couple years and are starting to provide resources beyond the platform like help w/ grantwriting and fundraising. Considering a couple of their key staff came from this widely used/well known fiscal sponsor/fundraising platform for artists and arts orgs, we should be able to leverage the Open Collective staff and partners for marketing and fundraising. If you're up for exploring integration of their platform and levaraging their team, we could set up Angel City Jazz/Arts as a fiscal host https://opencollective.com/become-a-host

I'm assuming what I'm talking about is my previous comment https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/34#issuecomment-1045550624 is confusing, it means we'll have capacity to provide 'fundraising' services similar to an org like https://www.fulcrumarts.org/fiscal-sponsorship/ (check out what they provide) along with marketing and promotion. We'll be able to provide by offering services in partnership with https://opencollective.foundation/ and some of 'their' partners and funders. Ideally at a cost structure similar to Fulcrum (administrative fee as a % on all charitable and earned income) or potentially subsidize with a grant on our side.

We're still in the process of solidifying these partnerships but I'm pretty confident we could help build capacity & provide the resources needed to reach a much larger audience. If you're open to becoming a fiscal host on their platform (no cost to set up), I'd be happy to help setup and admin. Then you'll be eligible for any benefits and services we provide.
