Archive 2021 VR events

Now that all of the 2021 VR videos are on the Oculus Channel (https://creator.oculus.com/community/148499143923838/) we'd like to add the trailers to the website.

My initial thought would be to convert the events to regular posts similar to what we did last year. For example - https://angelcityjazz.com/watch/chromaticity-trio/ https://angelcityjazz.com/watch/anthony-fung/

As it looks like there are multiple trailers/videos for each event (right?), we'd have to play with the format (i.e use a grid vs stacking each trailer).

That said, I tried to embed one of the vids by dropping in the url and it didn't work.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Either way, I think we should play with the format and add the trailers on the staging site - then I can copy each one over to live.

there is one trailer per band and 5 or more videos per band (one for each tune). I have the trailer files that could be embedded directly

So there would only be 5 or so trailers to embed total? Or do the videos themselves also have trailers? I couldn't tell if there was some setting that enabled you to embed the videos by dropping in the urls.

Either way, I think it makes sense to embed trailers on the corresponding event page. Then I can convert each to a post once we're happy with the format.

I was thinking to create a single page with all the trailers and info on how to watch in VR as opposed to doing a page for each band.

Agreed we should also group all the trailers together in their own section or page. Will have a better idea for how to present after seeing how the embeds look on an event page or two.

@angelcityjazz I change the post type and changed the template to one column (instead of one column wide). I'm trying to remove the header section with CSS so it would be consistent with last year's archives.

I think the trailer would be great if there was a thumbnail - without it, maybe we should just link the thumbnail image to the Oculus channel?

Anyhow - let me know what you think about this work in progress and I'll plan to spend some time improving tomorrow.

@angelcityjazz So I went back and created a couple reusable blocks. First I created one the pulls in the 'excerpt' and then some info on Oculus. We can tweak the format and edit the Oculus info in the reusable block. You'll see I added the block underneath the thumbnail that you added as the featured image.

When you're in edit mode, click on the thumbnail and you'll see it's an image (not the 'featured image block'); I did this so we can link the image to the cooresponding artist or playlist page on Oculus. Ideally we'd put the trailer here instead, but it doesn't look right with just a black screen and no thumnail. What do you think?

If you're happy with this format, all you'll need to do is

• keep the title the same (i.e. not sure we should include "...live at the live at the 2021 ACJF" since we can include in the excerpt and subtitle

• swap out the thumbnail as the featured image

• swap out the placeholder image with the same image just added as the featured image (replace --> select image --> media library

  

• update the subtitle - probably should read something like the following to be consistent with other archival vids in the Watch section "Recorded live at REDCAT for the 2021 Angel City Jazz Festival"; that said, I'm not sure we'll display this (at least for now)

• update the excerpt - this is where we can add more descriptive info - i.e "Mark Dresser 5 live at the 2021 ACJF. Recorded live on October 1, 2021 at REDCAT with 180 3D camera and ambisonic sound."

I also created a new reusable block for the 2021 vids and added to each existing page.

So once we're happy with the format (let me know what you think about the format as well as embedding the trailers as is), you can clone the posts that have multiple bands and fine tune.

The more I look at these the more I think we should skip the individual pages and just focus on creating one page with all the links to all the bands' videos.

Hey Rocco - great to see you got the thumbnail to show as the preview. Looks much better!

Looking at https://www.oculus.com/experiences/media/709824823317912/ along with I think if each artist page had the same info in the fields noted in the screengrab, we could make the pages consistent via reusable blocks and/or some custom css or theming.

With regards to your comment above -

Like what we're doing now? Just providing a link to the artist or playlist page on Oculus (rather than embedding a preview to each individual video)? If yes, and because we can't link the trailer embed to the corresponding Oculus page, I think we should use a button as opposed to linking in the info block. If we link instead to the Angel City Page (https://creator.oculus.com/community/148499143923838/), it'll be easier to customize the look as mentioned with reasuable blocks and/or custom theming.

Also... assuming you have thumbnail images, we could create a grid similar to what you see on the playlist page and link each image to the corresponding video page on Oculus

I think the simplest solution would be to create a single page with a grid listing each band and trailer and have that link to their respective playlist on Oculus. It would be total Overkill to try to have thumbnail linking to each video (there are close to 60 videos)

Let's make sure we're happy with the format before you get cranking! That way I can adjust the reusable blocks and theme (if necessary) before you clone the rest.

So it seems like we agree with my suggestion here? Personally, I don't think it would be overkill to add thumbnails for the 3 - 5 videos (or whatever the ##) for each artist. I think https://www.youtube.com/user/angelcityjazztv/videos looks pretty good. SOme improvements:

• the musicians line-up needs to be more organized maybe within a block with a different color
• there a bit too much purple on the page. Maybe the bio block should be black?

I think listing the lineups, links to reviews, quotes, and other archives are valuable to the fans and performers. That said, I agree the lineup is a bit much in the top right column.

Eitehr way, if we're 'not' listing the the linup in the excerpt so we can use the reusable block for consistancy.

I tried to play around and i'm confused by the block being an excerpt. It makes it more complicated to seit. Why not just have text blocks so we can freely edit them?

I think that looks fine. Just to clarify, we did not film all of the events. We only recorded 4 evenings (10/1, 10/9&10 and 10/15) so the video pages will not match the event pages in content.

These are the event pages converted to posts and reformatted. So there won't be corresponding event pages in the archives. Realizing we DO have both for the 2020 VR Fest (guess I wasn't aware of the 'post type switcher' plugin). Is that what you mean? Do we want old events in the archives or should we delete?

We do not need to archive shows that we did not film. I tweaked the excerpts to include a title so it looks a bit more balanced, does that work for you?. For the line-up box the problem is that the amount of info will change dramatically from band to band, from a single performer to a 17 piece band. Let's leave it out. We have the line-up on screen and on the Oculus page. At this point it's just redundant info that clutters these pages.

Maybe I can do a post introducing the videos. I also have behind the scene photos I could use.

YES! Think I suggested that somewhere in this issue. We could also feature the post in 'Explorations', the front page (recent posts section), and use to promote over social media.

Either way, I can start the process by importing the posts - then I can tweak the landing pages once we're happy with them on stage.

Since the videos are in the watch page I don’t think we need another page. I started a draft post on the live site. Just uploaded some photos for now. Not aure what format to use.

I think a stand alone page for each series works better - that way we can link directly from the front page and the post you're drafting - also from the 'more' links on the 'watch' landing page (see this example) - https://angelcityjazz.com/staging/6473/watch/

Personally I don't think it's a bad thing to display something like videos on multiple landing pages. Looking at it now, I think we might want to reformat the page.

Anyhow, we can tackle that after I add the videos to the other landing pages. If you're good with linking to the stand alone pages, I can replicate that pretty quick on the production site.

Ok, where would you link to the dedicated pages? Under the jazz festival page? I don’t think we want to create a new item on the main menu correct? I’m away from my computer until tomorrow. I will check the pages out then.

Ok, not sure what copy to put on the dedicated video pages or where they would be linked from but they look ok. For the festival page, I will try to find the banner without dates and maybe tweak the text a bit but you can go ahead and make all of these changes live.

Ok - I modified the following landing pages - click the buttons and you'll see they link to the stand-alone pages - https://angelcityjazz.com/ https://angelcityjazz.com/watch/

There are a couple modifications (for instance adding a category link on the landing pages and the video pages themselves) I'd like to make. Also would like to help format the afformentioned landing pages along with the festival page.

It'll be best to make the changes on stage and then copy over to live when we're happy. I'm not going to have time to do a proper job until Monday, but I did create a column and some placeholder text just in case you were planning on spending time over the weekend. You'll also see I added the pages as submenu items - just to see what that would look like - https://angelcityjazz.com/staging/6473/

Personally, I'd recommend 1) making sure we're happy with all the video pages (and that all the embeds are links are working); 2) copying over the reformatted landing pages (when we're happy and sign off); 3) publishing the post you're working on (I can help with that); 4) come up with a plan to promote

If that sounds reasonable, I'll update this issue https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/34 (you'll see I altered the title) next chance I get and then will dive back in on Monday!

In the meantime, comment here if you are running into any glaring issues on the live site with regards to the archives.
