Create a host org on Open Collective as well as a fundraising plan #38

Closed gusaus closed 1 year ago

gusaus commented 2 years ago

I'm all for raising funds, but I do not have a budget for fundraising activities.

If we set up ACJ on Open Collective, we'll tap into resources I tried to outline here https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/34#issuecomment-1045550624. Big benefit would be that Open Collective Foundation (in partnership with OpenProducer, an Open Collective Foundation project), could provide the following types of services to Angel City Arts.

I'm not sure the services would be free (I'm currently talking with OCF about costs and how OpenProducer can partner), but considering we'd integrate Open Collective (see how it works) into the website (we'd integrate into our platform so no additional cost to you) we could eliminate the need for most of your paid plugins (including almost $500 of WooCommerce plugins https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/35). If you'd be able to re-allocate that budget to 'fundraising' services, I'm thinking that would probably suffice.

If it sounds like an option worth exploring, I can spin off a separate issue and outline the benefits and next steps.

@angelcityjazz OpenProducer is 'finally' about to launch a pilot program where we'd work on sites running on the Newspack/WordPress platform and also help the participants manage and build capacity (training, fundraising, finding contributors, etc). As you're already a partner using the platform, I'm considering ACJ already a participant!

The first step in the process would be to reassess your goals and needs (website and content https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/34) and put together a fundraising plan to achieve them.

Referenced above https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/38#issue-1205851936 is how we can help (potentially with no additional cost).

The only thing needed to proceed (assuming you'd like to move forward) would be for you to create a 'fiscal host' on Open Collective for Angel City nonprofit org. The following documentation page 'should' provide you with info you need to explain what it is and how to set that up. https://docs.opencollective.com/help/fiscal-hosts/become-a-fiscal-host

Hi Rocco - circling back here to try and clarify what I referenced above. There are basically two different things I'm proposing....

Set up on Open Collective

Setting up ACA as host org (see more info on setting up a host org) would enable us to use their platform (see how it works) to do things like -

Because we can embed their widgets (see more info on the embed process) we could eliminate the need for most of your paid plugins (including almost $500 of WooCommerce plugins https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/35).

Skim through this page for additional info on what it does, fees, and how to set ACA as a host org.

If you decide to move forward, I'll be happy to help set up and admin ongoing.

Participate in OpenProducer's community media pilot

My agency OpenProducer along with partners such as Open Collective Foundation (OpenProducer's fiscal sponsor), NFCB, WordPress Training are launching a pilot (see this overview) that will provide training, mentorship and technical assistance to not only manage the website, but implement strategic engagement, content and revenue goals while growing the organizational capacity to sustain over time.

We're still in the process of determining the cost but most likely we could start without an additional budget if we set up ACA on Open Collective; cancel the paid plugins (referenced below); re-allocate the cost savings as a donation to OpenProducer's collective - Name Your Price / $49 / JUN 29, 2022 WooCommerce Subscriptions / $199 / JUL 27, 2022 WooCommerce Memberships / $199 / JUL 1, 2022

Comment here if there's anything you're still confused about or let me know if there's additional info you need to better evaluate.

Hi Gus, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this open collective thing> it seems quite complicated and I'm not sure I understand all of the financial and tax implications. Is there a way to visualize how the money would flow from donors, ticket buyers to open collective and to our bank account? Meanwhile, my designer was able to do a an animated gif of the banner and I uploaded it on our webpage. I think it looks great.

I tried to add the animated banner to the homepage as well but there are white margins in between the image and the blocks. Is there a way to eliminate those?

You would connect the collective to your existing Stripe, Paypal, and bank accounts (see the requirements) - there's also info on the lower section of this page about how to set up - I would help you!

In terms of tax/liabilities, there's really nothing new to navigate 'unless' ACA decides to provide fiscal sponsorship to outside groups in the future. Info on this page is largely geared to the latter use case. Since we'd only be using it internally for ACA, it's really like swapping out WooCommerce plugins (which connect with Stripe) with Open Collective.

In terms of funds going in, we'd probably use to take donations (in the short term) - check out OpenProducer's donate page (running on the same Newspack/WordPress platform as you) - the donate block is an embed that you'd get with your Open Collective. While it's not quite as slick as the Newspack block - it's free (check out this section for more details on fees), so you wouldn't have to renew the Woo Name Your Price and Subscriptions later this month.

We can also use it for memberships, but I can hold off explaining how we'd set up until you're ready to do so. That said, we wouldn't be using WooCommerce Memberships so you could cancel that too.

Ticketing is still a feature in the works. It is possible to create tickets (see this section in the docs) but it's not yet at the point where you could use it to sell tickets for the festival (at least this year).

This comparison describes some of the similarities/differences with 'crowdfunding' platforms like Patreon, KickStarter, and GoFundMe. Even if we didn't embed/integrate into the website, Open Collective provides a page where you can take donations, sponsorships, and run multiple crowdfunding campaigns.

Here are a few examples of music/arts groups using Open Collective - https://opencollective.com/resonate https://opencollective.com/big-arts-organization https://opencollective.com/study-into-action

Again, I'd help with every step of the setup (on Open Collective and the website).

The other benefit of setting up with them would be access to their team and partners for fundraising, marketing/promotion, and any other areas where you could use some help.

Let me know if that helps clarify.

Ok, I’m down to make the switch. When are the Woo commerce plug ins renewing?

@angelcityjazz I'm assuming https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/38#issuecomment-1274201731 is also old, but it's a reminder that we should pick up on https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/38#issuecomment-1159277683 at some point and set up ACA as a host org on Open Collective.

Probably can wait until the festival is over... unless you have some spare time and are looking for additional stuff to do beforehand.

gusaus commented 1 year ago

@angelcityjazz Once you set up a fiscal host on Open Collective we'll be able to resolve https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/50

I'd suggest reading through https://github.com/OpenProducer/angelcityjazz/issues/38#issuecomment-1159277683 and the referenced documentation.

Let me know and I'll help clarify and setup tomorrow (or whenever you have a chance to set up).
