Migrate from Bluehost to WP Engine

@tonyzeoli has set up the environment on WP Engine and has invited me in. I'm looking over the migration process and it looks like they use the same service (BlogVault) as Pantheon. They also have detailed documentation and good support (unlike Bluehost!) https://wpengine.com/support/wp-engine-automatic-migration-powered-by-blogvault

So I 'should' be able to handle this w/o any/much hand holding.

We can use this issue to make sure I'm clear on the process and don't miss any steps. We can add to and revise the following checklist as we go:

• [x] Get the live site ready for migration
• [x] Do initial migration (we would do a subsequent migration before pointing the domain)
• [x] Add domain to user portal
• [x] Set up Cloudflare
• [x] Point DNS to WP Engine
• [x] Set up email
• [ ] Add SSL

A couple things we need to sort out before we ditch Bluehost. First off the domain(s) is registered with Bluehost and we need to make sure we can point the domain without needing to switch registrars (something we may want to do before they expire)

You should be able to migrate the DNS to Cloudflare. Please set a free Cloudflare account and then set the name servers to Cloudflare after the migration. You should be able to set custom name servers in Bluehost.

You should install the WP Engine Migration plug-in and then set the credentials in the plug-in. Once you do that, the plug-in should suck everything from Bluehost and put it into WP Engine period then you want to make sure you set up the domain name in the WP engine domains dashboard. Once that’s done, if you set up Cloudflare first, you can change the sea name records for WP Engine in Cloudflare DNS panel and then change the Bluehost custom name servers to what Cloudflare gives you.

I forget if the email just came with the Choice Plus hosting (I'll check with support) but let's assume we need a different email hosting provider. @tonyzeoli do you have any recommendations?

For email, I use Google Workspace but it’s like $5 per email account per month. However you get all the Google tools. You can just stay in Bluehost email. When you set up Cloudflare and you plugin the domain name to the set up screen, Cloudflare will fetch all the records from Bluehost DNS including the MX records. So the mail records will persist and you shouldn’t need to do anything there.

The Cloudflare free tier will suffice.

I'm not sure we can continue using them after we cancel the current hosting plan. I'll check with their gawd awful customer service, but I assume we'd be good until we cancel.

Hosting and email are usually different plans with different pricing. They should be tied to the same plan. Look around the blue hose billing and check.

After chatting with Bluehost support (see the attached transcript) - It looks like we'll need to find a different email host before we cancel the hosting plan. Until then (the current plan expires on 10/13/22) we should be good.

That said we should probably spin up a separate issue to evaluate email options.

@tonyzeoli @angelcityjazz Unless I'm missing something, we should be able to migrate without any downtime or need to put the live site in maintenance mode.

If this is correct, I'll begin the initial migration process later this afternoon.

We can migrate with no downtime. The switch happens when you change the DNS nameserver at Bluehost from Bluehost maintained namesearver to a custom nameserver that is something like kim.ns.cloudflare.com and duke.ns.cloudflare.com. Because the CNAME record will be added to Cloudflare and not to Bluehost's DNS, that's when the switch will transpire.

@tonyzeoli @angelcityjazz Initial migration is complete! Did a quick scan of the site and the only problem I'm seeing are the broken thumbnails for the Past Programs https://angelcityjazz.wpengine.com/angel-city-jazz-fest/

I forget the process, but aren't those thumbnails autogenerated when you upload an image? Maybe all the thumbnails didn't migrate initially? Guess I could check the folders once I figure out how to do that on WP Engine.

Ok - so I figured out how to access files via sftp and it looks like everything is there (probably a lot of files we can remove). I looked at the code again and realized the links to thumbnails were going to stage.

So I'm going to correct on production - add @tonyzeoli as admin - then do a second migration.

Does that sound like a good way to go?

No, talk to WP Engine support through the chat bot and they'll fix it for you. That shouldn't have happened. There shouldn't be staging URLs. They can do a URL rewrite and fix it. They're very good about that stuff.

When you say "staging" URLs, I think you are mistaken.

You're pushing into the PROD environment so your "temporary URL" may have the wrong path. Not your "staging URL" which would be the STAGING environment, which you haven't set up yet, I don't believe.

It wasn't a problem with migration - it was from when the site was first developed on Pantheon and then migrated to Bluehost. Some of the links were to files on Pantheon or Bluehost stage. I went back and fixed them all on the live site.

Okay, there’s a plugin that you can use which will rewrite all URLs to the specified URL so that they all match. But if they’re all correct now because you reattached the images that’s fine too. But you have to make sure that when you push live that all URLs are correct at the primary URL or you have to rewrite them.

Ok - I'm in the process of updating DNS - logging the screengrabs here just to make sure I'm doing this right. First off, I set up Cloudflare and added the CNAME from WP Engine - does this look right?

Then I'm supposed to add these Cloudflare nameservers...

It's not 100% clear to you that you needed to "upgrade the network" at WP Engine to use their new configuration.

Use this as the CNAME: wp.wpenginepowered.com and not the other one you have there. I've upgraded the network in the WP Engine CPanel under Domains, so now it's going to use the new network and not the old.

Also, there are a lot of A records and CNAMEs for Bluehost stuff that will no longer be needed.

And, you have to add the MX Records for Google Workspace. You can find those here: https://support.google.com/a/answer/174125

I decided to hit that and it brought up Cloudflare and changed the record. I turned on the Proxy status... but I'm not sure if I should.

Seems to be working now, but it's redirecting to https://angelcityjazz.wpengine.com/

I know this is a simple fix, but the automatic record change threw me off.

What should the proper target be for www?

@angelcityjazz More time consuming than expected, due to steep learning curve and a very strange issue @tonyzeoli helped with, but I 'think' we've got everything migrated to the new host. There most likely will be some additional performance improvements we'll be working in over time. For now, let's just make sure everything works on https://angelcityjazz.com/

Two things we'll want to check on -

• Logging in and accessing your account as a customer - https://angelcityjazz.com/my-account/ ; I just logged in with a test customer account and everything seemed fine; I checked to see if Don Mankin's account and purchase history was intact; all looks fine. Maybe you can ask him to try logging in again?
• Creating/pushing products from Printful; see if works now - it should! If not, I'm sure it'll be something we can resolve now that we're on a real host.

Those are the main things - other than that I'd just test the site and comment here about any broken links or other issues you come across.

Like I said, we should be working in improvements and additional functionality down the line. So much easier on this setup and with Tony in loop!

I've spawned the Staging and Development environments based on the Production backup from 4 hours ago. You now have:

acjstg.wpengine.com (staging) acjdev.wpengine.com (development)

The user/pass is the same for both sites as the production environment since both sites are simply copies of the live site and database.

Please note that WP Engine provides Git connectivity. There is documentation on it. So, if you were working on Dev you could commit to Git for version control with other participant developers.

Please also note that WP Engine's new Advanced Network works directly with Cloudflare anyway. They've jettisoned MaxCDN in favor of Cloudflare. You'll want to make sure in Cloudflare that you've checked the optimization settings and you want to force https, as well.

You can install the Cloudflare plugin for WordPress and connect your Cloudflare account to WordPress that way, as well. I'm not sure if that's necessary nowadays, but I do it anyway just to ensure I have it all working correctly. You'll need to get the API key from Cloudflare to activate the plugin connection.

There are also WordPress Page Rules that you can activate in Cloudflare to optimize Cloudflare for WordPress. You'll want to Google that and get the best-recommended page rule settings for WordPress and Cloudflare. For example, you don't want to cache that admin system, so you'll set a page rule to take care that among other things.

Those are the main things - other than that I'd just test the site and comment here about any broken links or other issues you come across.

Like I said, we should be working in improvements and additional functionality down the line. So much easier on this setup and with Tony in loop!

I'll be away from the computer for the next hour or so, but will check back in to resolve any urgent issues that come up in testing.

Yep, I did that to enable the Advanced network which is why the CNAME record is now wp.wpenginepowered.com. The Not Served notifications are there because the DNS has not switched over yet. That will change once that happens.

I know this is a simple fix, but the automatic record change threw me off.
