What is this feature about?

Adding ALTRIOS as an optional plug-in would enable detailed second-by-second simulation of powertrain energy consumption for various novel locomotive decarbonization technologies.

Why is this feature valuable?

This feature matters because ALTRIOS has already solved the problem of locomotive/consist powertrain simulation for conventional diesel, battery electric, and hybrid locomotives with options in development for handling catenary charging.

That sounds like a very cool idea indeed. We had plans to model and integrate simulation for such rolling stocks eventually, but haven't quite reached that point yet. Here are some notes off the top of my head:

• we have a custom data model / format for rolling stocks, which we intend to extend to support battery electric / hybrid trains. this format would have to be carefully extended to include data required by altrios
• the apps has a web editor where new rolling stocks can be created and simulated, which also needs to be updated as the format evolves
• and of course, the simulation engine also needs work:
  • any track properties required by altrios would need to be added as well
  • we'd need an API to simulate the train over our infrastructure (some kind of track path adapter)
  • our users rely margins a lot, and it's note quite clear yet for us how these integrate with battery electric trains
