Fedora 35 - Tracks do not appear in main screen #4633

Describe the bug The Tracks do not appear in the main screen, see attached "OpenshotIssue-screenshot.png" file. This happens in all 2.6.1 versions I tried including latest Daily Build. Also happens with the older 2.5.x version. This issue only started happening in Fedora 35. It was fine before that. Have attached the "openshot-qt.log" file in which error "WARNING webengine: WebEngine backend still not ready after 145 retries". This message repeats over and over again.

Steps to reproduce the behavior: Reproducable 100% of the time when starting Openshot.

  1. Go to '...'
  2. Click on '....'
  3. Scroll down to '....'
  4. See error

Expected behavior A clear and concise description of what you expected to happen. The tracks should appear so a video project can be started.

Very odd... I'll take a look at these logs.

Any progress with this? Issue is still there today with latest Openshot Daily Build (9185) and latest FC35 updates. Two more (duplicate) issues regarding this exact same problem have now been logged by others. Issue # 4657 & 4676.

I have the same issue with the appimage version 2.6.1 and for the daily builds as well. Any Idea how to resolve this issue, as I can not get openshot running after python3.10

@usamael2000 Could you include your setup, like what OS/distro you're running? We're trying to track down what specific circumstances are leading to this.

Also could either of you try running appimage_filename.appimage --web-backend webkit? Let me know if that changes anything.

Have tried this. Openshot fails to load with this option, see attached log file.

The above is not applicable to Fedora35. The latest Daily Build (9246) still does not work. There is an Openshot package for FC35 that I installed with "sudo dnf install openshot", this also installs the following dependencies, see attached file. This installs successfully and Openshot runs, including the Tracks / Timeline appears on the main screen. HOWEVER, Openshot playback runs extremely slow and is very choppy to the point that it is unusable.

The Appimage still displays the same issue, with the tracks missing, and the same startup error when adding the "--web-backend webkit" option. So to recap, still in the same situation with FC35. Install_Openshot_package.txt

@usamael2000, thank you for this! Adding this "--no-sandbox" option indeed appears to get around the 'tracks/timeline missing' issue with the Appimage. BTW, how did you know about this option? It does not appear under "--help". I've tried this with the latest 9246 build and it works for as far as I've tested. A lot of errors show up when Openshot starts, see attached log file taken from the console messages. Hopefully these are useful in nailing down the root issue. A root issue that is obviously still there and needs addressing. I'll test this "--no-sandbox" workaround more and will report any issues here. Openshot_WorkingWithNoSandboxOption.txt

I found the "--no-sandbox" here: https://community.rstudio.com/t/rstudio-startup-issues/129247/3 It was something someone suggested to get around the Rstudio issue. I also had a problem with Mendeley Desktop (deb and generic) and with the Mendeley Appimage, as well, and the "no-sandbox" worked for me. Anyway I ended up using the Mendeley flathab from here: https://flathub.org/apps/details/com.elsevier.MendeleyDesktop

I was also having this problem and the --no-sandbox argument works for me as well. It does throw that error about not finding the argument but then the timeline shows up and is functional after your close it.

I just wish an update on the underlying 'missing tracks' problem would be provided by the developers. It is clear the issue is with the AppImage. I found somewhere that changes were made to 'glibc' in latest versions of Linux (Fedora35 being one of them) that may be causing these issues. It is not limited to OpenShot alone.

And I've started to use AppImage for more applications (e.g. CAD) since suddenly in Fedora 34 (and 35) issues show up when using rpm which don't show up when using AppImage.

@Ednaordinary, Compiling the code will probably work fine. As stated above, it seems clear the problem is with the creation of the Appimage, not with OpenShot itself. I've more or less proven this by installing the OpenShot RPM package that is available for Fedora. The 'missing tracks' issue does not occur then. The problem is that the available RPM is the original OpenShot V2.6.1 which is unusable because of all the bugs. So had to remove that again and go back to the Appimage.

The OpenShot developers need to look at the Appimage creation in combination with the latest Linux releases. It is only then that the problem occurs. As stated before, have read that changes were made in the 'glibc' libraries that may be causing this issue. It is not limited to OpenShot alone. The '--no-sandbox' option disables the sandboxing security feature, so this is the area that needs to be investigated when creating the Appimage. Obviously not an ideal situation that this security feature needs to be disabled for the Appimage to work.
