Describe the bug When splitting a video into clips OR previewing the video all frames but the first are black

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Import the file into Openshot.
  2. Right click | Split File
  3. See the baseball field (the first frame).
  4. Click on the Play button in the "Split Clip" window to preview.
  5. The window turns black and I am unable to se the video. Audio works

I can split videos into three segments using the Split Clip option without any issues either.

Expected behavior A clear and concise description of what you expected to happen.

Hello @k2cCreations A few questions for you:

  1. If you drag the .mp4 file onto a Track do you see the video play correctly in the "Video Preview" window?
  2. Go into Edit | Preferences | Performance and provide me with a screen shot of this page.
  3. What is your "Default Profile"?

Videos play fine when adding them to the track, I only seem to have issues using right click preview or split clip

Colorjet3 commented 1 year ago

Thank @k2cCreations for the screenshots.

In Edit | Preferences | Preview tab, please change the "Default Audio Sample Rate" from 44100 to 48000. Restart Openshot and try again.

I know that doesn't sound like it would be the issue but it is a bit complicated to explain.

k2cCreations commented 1 year ago

I tried that but the settings don't seem to stay

@Colorjet3 I installed my Razer headset and still have the same issue

Colorjet3 commented 1 year ago

Hello @k2cCreations Thank you for all that information. I have assigned this to the DEV team to look into this issue.

Colorjet3 commented 1 year ago

Hello @k2cCreations. Please try changing the Sample rate from ".... (DVD Quality)" to "....(Studio Quality)". Let me know if this made a difference.

k2cCreations commented 1 year ago

Hello @Colorjet3 I tried all 3 studio settings pictured below. The 96000 option would would have audio that sounded like a cassette tape on fast forward, but I would get 2-3 FPS in the preview.

The other 2 settings made no difference, same thing as before

I did take the time today to install virtual box and the latest ubuntu build, I had the same issues on that OS

jodav5628 commented 1 year ago

Having same issue after upgrading to version 3.1.1 / libopenshot 0.3.2. Went through debugging process of deleting log files, installing daily build (OpenShot-v3.1.1-daily-11427-42c84e7a-dce55693-x86_64.exe). Default Audio Sample Rate" already at 48000. Restarted Openshot and tried again and still experiencing same issue. libopenshot.log openshot-qt.log

I have the same issue, the video preview showed black screen. It occurred after i changed Hardware Decoder Mode into Linux VA-API, then I reverted it back into CPU - No Acceleration, the preview video worked as normal.

johnruemker commented 1 year ago

Having the same issue with Preview File and Split Clip going black after starting playback in that window. Started when I upgraded from F36 to F38 which brought me to openshot-3.1.1-1.fc38.noarch and libopenshot-0.3.2-1.fc38.x86_64

gjcarrow commented 1 year ago

And progress on this issue?

TWSE8 commented 1 year ago

I've had the same issue and could not resolve it with multiple settings changes. Had to revert back to 2.5, which does not have all the features I want. Will come back to OpenShot if they fix it, but using other tools for the moment.

k2cCreations commented 1 year ago

Honestly I gave up and spent some money for the Adobe Video Editor, I had projects I needed to complete

motionharvest commented 11 months ago

I'm having this issue also, but I'm in Linux Mint running the appimage. image

mpenkov commented 11 months ago

Still a problem in the latest build OpenShot-v3.1.1-daily-11620-2034f45d-08c2cdd1-x86_64.AppImage on Xubuntu 23.04 (lunar).

Aside from this one bug, I've found OpenShot quite intuitive. Hope you guys can fix this.

Colorjet3 commented 11 months ago

This issue is in the queue to be fixed. Unfortunately I can not give you an ETA. Need the lead developers input on this.

Keep in mind that even thought you see the black screen during the preview, if you go ahead and create the new split file, and then drag it onto a track, that it should work properly (just a workaround).

mpenkov commented 11 months ago

Thank you for the update. Yes, that workaround works, in theory. In practice, it complicates the workflow: in order to preview a video, you have to drag it to a track, and if it turns out that's not the video you want to use, you have to remove it from the track, and repeat for the other videos in the playlist until you get to the one that you want.

I've found that dragging the progress indicator in the preview window also works, as long as you don't care about the sound. Another workaround is to preview and order the files before adding them to openshot, using a separate player (ffplay, vlc, etc).

Yeah, let's hope the root cause gets fixed in a future release so we don't have to deal with workarounds.

Thanks for the update on this!!!

Also eager to see resolution on this, as it is the only problem I am consistently facing when processing video files. Running on Windows 10 Pro, Version 10.0.19043 Build 19043. None of the above resolution attempts have worked for me.

Colorjet3 commented 8 months ago

Hello @Vaneyen. I recommend you perform a clean installation of OpenShot (installing the latest DEV Daily Build) using these instructions.. When you get to step 6 be sure to execute step 6.2.

Now see if the workaround works.

pbwdq commented 8 months ago

I have the same issue with default settings of openshot today's latest 3.1.1 daily build on Windows10, Intel Xeon E3-1270v5, GTX1060 6GB. I can play videos on normal right side window and can edit them well but only when right click and splitting, new separate preview movie doesn't work, sound is okay. VLC, Google Chrome, and Firefox are also fine on my computer. Thanks.

Colorjet3 commented 8 months ago

All. This is still not yet resolved and is also related to the "Preview File" option when you right click on a video file int the "Project Files" and select "Preview File". See these for more details: https://trello.com/c/qTWNLUV8/37-preview-file-plays-certain-file-types-with-out-of-sync-audio-timeline-works-fine https://trello.com/c/SoP95Hsv/74-preview-file-playback-is-out-of-sync-resolution-is-bad-noise-distortion-and-play-pause-behavior

This has been assigned to the lead developer (@jonoomph).

HorseChandelier2023 commented 8 months ago

Just a quick note: Windows 10 22h2

In all these cases I did NOT delete the openshot_qt folder under c:\users\ mostly becasue I didn;t read the 'how to clean up after an Openshot uninstall for a dev install' instructions provided up thread.

Had issue on 3.1.1. Uninstalled. Installed 2.6.1 - same issue. Uninstalled. Hunted through registry by hand removing all keys with Openshot in them (not MRUCache etc. as that wont have any effect on the running program) - mostly found in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\lowregistry\audio\policyconfig\propertystore. Installed 2.5.1 (libopenshot 0.2.5) - behaves as expected - preview window works in clip creation, project file preview and main playthorugh preview. Uninstalled 2.5.1. Removed all reg keys as before. Installed 3.1.1 - same issue (sort of, but related I guess - instead of black - like 2.6.1- it displays first frame of video clip) Uninstalled Installed 2.5.1 (no reg scrubbing) - behaves as expected.

Dunno if that helps at all but I need to use Openshot just now and reverting to 2.5.1 seems to be the only way to make it work for me.

Colorjet3 commented 8 months ago

Thank you @HorseChandelier2023 for all that insight. Hopefully you are able to make v2.5.1 work for you as long as you don't need any of the newer features that are in v3.1.1.

At this time the lead developer or any of the other volunteer developers will need to intervene and fix the issue.

margamanterola commented 3 months ago

Still seeing this issue with OpenShot-v3.1.1-x86_64.AppImage, on a current Debian stable installation.

Is there any information that we could add to help with solving this issue? Is there any other workaround that we can do, apart from putting the clips in the timeline to view them?

Thanks!

Colorjet3 commented 3 months ago

Hello @margamanterola Please be sure you are running the latest dev daily build AppImage (openshot.org/download/#daily) and not the product release version. If the problem persists then it is still in the queue to be fixed.

I would like confirmation either way.

margamanterola commented 3 months ago

I've just tried with the latest daily (OpenShot-v3.1.1-dev-daily-12180-d73763f1-5e9fa273-x86_64.AppImage) and preview and split work correctly on that one. Thanks! :)
