The example dataset is necessary to identify the workspace as "NWB" and open it with NWB explorer by default. A workspace without resources is a vanilla workspace and it's opened with Jupyter lab. What about making this fact more explicit from the creation buttons?
As for the popup, I think it's better to wait for this before the first real release when features are more established and we set up some kind of content management. The risk is that the text becomes easily outdated as we update the features.
@filippomc Sure, it's better to make it explicit when creating a new workspace, that if you want an empty workspace, then go for the Jupyterlab. A user will normally open a specific NWB file with a workspace if they just want to look at that, and even if they do open one with Ferguson, they can now delete it.
Agreed re the popup to wait a while, but something we should plan for each of the 3 applications, a kind of brief intro to usage, that can be updated with a single textfile somewhere, with a tickbox saying "Don't show this next time", etc. to supress the popup
