Past notes:

• Langenium #39 - Basic scenery

  • Checking old Blender files, the Union platform looks like a good one to reuse but I might copy and paste it into a Blender 4.1 file.

  • Added Union Platform and it looks alright but needs work

  • Testing BlenderKit materials but something is wrong with exporting them, could be worth just setting up some in-engine materials using https://freepbr.com/ and also need to create a test scene that focuses on an object in isolation.

  • Testing out procedural materials from Blender Kit on the Mercenary Valiant aircraft

    • Didn't export, gltf exporter can't compile stuff it has to be manually baked
      • Followed a tutorial but the resulting textures are a bit blurry and super bulky
      • The shader generating this is quite simple, it might be possible to recreate it
    • Tried to use NodeToy, it was easy enough to recreate the material to a close result but it doesn't work in Langenium for some reason

  • Fixed bug with thruster trailing by making it move up a little bit based on speed

  • Refactoring glsl usage to use THREE.ShaderChunk to simulate file includes and split out all the gradient functions into their own file
  • Tried to get voronoi working for displacement in the vertex shader but no go
    • Turns out even Blender wasn't doing it, it's just a displacement map...
    • Implemented normal map approach used on the sky, looks good
  • Applied procedural metal to union platform
  • Debugging why Orbit Controls don't work even though they seem to be active
    • Looks like OrbitControls don't work because of the flight instruments layer
  • Added parameters to control the Union Platform material and testing
    • It looks good enough, but isn't wowing me.
    • The generated normal map is slow
  • Tried to implement a caching function for shader materials but it's quite problematic. Seems to not be a way to output the shaded texture and the coordinates it's using, so when I grab the image generated it doesn't look the same when applied to the same object - the mapping is completely wrong.
  • Working on new procedural metal using brick textures
    • Implementing brick textures in GLSL - having issues with mapping the examples to 3D space..
