I don't know whether it fits into the scope of the hackathon, this might have even planned, but I feel that availability of central platform with educational resources will greatly help the researchers in Phylogeny community to learn, understand, use, extend and develop the OpenTree resources.

Educational resources: A website with categorical and/or application based listing of phylogenetic tools. Each tool can be supplemented with tutorial or usage guidelines and few test cases.

Awareness program: NESCent and Open Tree of Life are actively involved in development of resources for community of phylogeny researchers. There might be efforts from the organizations to extend and promote the use of these resources. That will further nurture the discussions from users ends and may give new developmental directions. Recorded webinars, workshops, lecture series etc with global reach will help spread the utility of these resources.

Coursera: A MOOC on Coursera or similar platform on Phyloinformatics geared up by OpenTree's resources will be useful to students and researchers to understand and apply them in their projects. It may open new avenues for future researchers.

There was an attempt to create a phylogenetics textbook on Wikibooks that appears to have stalled four years ago. It'd be a great place for introductory resources, tutorials, and tool comparisons: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Phylogenetics

Right, it needs to be updated.
