Hmm, it gets more complicated. irmng.org also thinks Erica is unaccepted, with Calluna R.A. Salisbury, 1802 preferred. But it only puts one species in Calluna, so IRMNG must split up Erica. I tracked down Ericodes nidularium as an example and irmng.org puts it in Eriogonum A. Michaux, 1803 . To straighten this out will require implementation of something like #336, besides just figuring out what the priority classification ought to be. (IRMNG seems to go by SN2000, while GBIF uses IPNI, and I haven't checked what the plant list says.)
@mtholder what was the source of your determination?
hi @jar398, @mtholder ,
Just checked IRMNG and it gives the following instances of "Erica":
Erica Peckham, 1892 IRMNG_ID: 1280620 - an animal in Chelicerata Erica Linnaeus, 1753 IRMNG_ID: 1280648 - accepted plant genus in Ericaceae Erica Boehmer in C.G. Ludwig, 1760 IRMNG_ID: 1280649 accepted as Andromeda Linnaeus, 1753 (plant) Erica Wenz, 1919 IRMNG_ID: 1280621 accepted as Ericia Moquin-Tandon in Partiot, 1848 (mollusc) Erica O. Kuntze, 1891 IRMNG_ID: 1280670 accepted as Calluna R.A. Salisbury, 1802 (plant)
Erica Linnaeus, 1753 is the familiar plant genus (with only 6 children in IRMNG at this time although there are probably >800 valid and another 1000+ invalid ones according to The Plant List, http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/search?q=Erica) and is marked accepted. Erica O. Kuntze, 1891 (the synonym of Calluna) is a homonym and not the same as Erica Linnaeus, 1753.
Hope this helps...
BTW I upgraded Ericodes to be a synonym of Erica a couple of weeks ago, following reading about it here and locating a suitable source for the assertion. This will post-date the version of IRMNG that GBIF and OTT have (2014) and also the recent April 2017 release available as a download (the live web version will always be the latest and may be out of step with any earlier data dump).
Thanks, I always get lost in these thickets... probably why I'm not a taxonomist. so a reference is http://irmng.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=1280648 retrieved on 2017-05-25, and the fix is to absorb Ericodes (coming exclusively from GBIF) into Erica.
Just some notes...
These genera are both in Ericales.
GBIF says: Ericodes O. Kuntze, 1891 / Taxonomic status: accepted genus / GBIF ID 7327472
but it gives the source as IRMNG, and GBIF says IRMNG gives status as "genus of unknown status".
irmng.org, on the other hand, has it as 'unaccepted' with Erica Linnaeus, 1753 as the accepted name. So we can give the reference for this change as http://irmng.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=1384855.
The effect of the change will be to move 79 taxon records to Erica, which is already quite large.
