I'm not a huge fan of the results that I receive when I search for Mowbray. Mitchell's Plain hospital doesn't interest me. The radius is too large for me.

longhotsummer commented 9 years ago

What do you suggest, particularly for areas far from hospitals. The top X results within 1000km, ranked by distance?

That's what I was thinking. If the nearest hospital is 100km away then we don't need to know about hospitals 600km away.

In a more densely populated area, hospitals are more closely packed together so I don't care about hospitals 13km away from me On 17 Oct 2014 7:46 AM, "Greg Kempe" notifications@github.com wrote:

Is it that simple? What if the 12th hospital is 13km away but is the best?

Then I know to search in another area. The best burns unit might be in gauteng, doesn't mean that I expect it to feature in my search results.

Might also be a reason to allow search by hospital On 17 Oct 2014 7:57 AM, "Greg Kempe" notifications@github.com wrote:

Can you think of a way we can combine and weight the distance and overall rating to balance that a bit, at least when there are many close hospitals?

Eg. So that a 5 star hospital 5km away is ranked higher in search results than a 3 star 3 or 4km away?

I think that's too complex. What question are you trying to answer? On 17 Oct 2014 8:08 AM, "Greg Kempe" notifications@github.com wrote:

Ideally we want to be able to show the user the best hospital near them, after one search. Ordering only by distance isn't quite as good as it could be (although it may be okay). If we can combine the two factors somehow, that would be great.

Otherwise we can simply limit to the closest 10 hospitals?

adieyal commented 9 years ago

Problem with best hospitals is that not all hospitals provide the same services. You can't really suggest one over the other. On 17 Oct 2014 8:35 AM, "Greg Kempe" notifications@github.com wrote:

It's not by radius - it's simply the 15 closest hospitals. If you're in the middle of the Karoo, you'll have hospitals 100km and more away in the results. Initially I was going to do three closest, but I had 15 for testing, and it didn't feel like too many.

adieyal commented 9 years ago

This isn't crucial now but seeing Khayelitsha hospital when I search for Mowbray seems weird. The question is how to fix it (and is it possible to fix).

I think that sorting by best hospital is out. Different hospitals provide different services and are typically not fungible. Distance is a more neutral measure.

One approach would be to give me the 3 closest hospitals with a more button. Another option would give me all the hospitals within 5kms (or whatever), but if I don't get at least x results, then give me the x closest hospitals.

We did discuss having the option to reorder, or filter by hospital type, but it was decided that that would unnecessarily complicate the interface. I think that if we have a "More" button, we've essentially failed to find the best hospitals close by. What might work well, however, is highlighting the top hospital in the results with a different colour.

adieyal commented 9 years ago

Agreed regarding filtering by hospital type. I just have a problem with the notion of "best" hospital. I would avoid that judgement since it is a lot more nuanced than that.
