5 years ago I have no idea whether this does what it claims to be (this is python, after all) but the change looks like it's not breaking anything when not using the option - so "feature ACK and it looks harmless, so code ACK" :-)
This is useful when building multiple versions of the same driver with different component ids, descriptions and such.
