Hi @yorikvanhavre @AnisGitHub

A meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday(3/10) to go over the two design options. Let's work toward that deadline if you can.

@yorikvanhavre In addition to revamping 'Proposal 1', can you do the renderings for both proposals as well?

@AnisGitHub as you suggested via email, let's have a meeting this afternoon(3/5) Does 3pm CST work for you and @yorikvanhavre?

yorikvanhavre commented 9 years ago

Works for me, the deadline, the renderings and the meeting... I'll try to have a new design between today and tomorrow, and I can do the renderings on monday.

AnisGitHub commented 9 years ago

Works for me as well.

theoryshaw commented 9 years ago

@yorikvanhavre if interested...snapshot so far... https://github.com/OpeningDesign/Sports_Complex/commit/c393192603e653c81bf1ac4123a74a73ffcd0073

theoryshaw commented 9 years ago

Thanks @yorikvanhavre Can we get together today to discuss proposal 3? Thx.

theoryshaw commented 9 years ago

@yorikvanhavre I'm wondering if you could critique Proposal 2? I'd like to hear your feedback on it too.

theoryshaw commented 9 years ago

Overall, I like the approach of Proposal 3. Here's a couple comments/opinions to inform our discussion...

yorikvanhavre commented 9 years ago

Hi @theoryshaw Honestly I have not much to say about proposal 2... The "all polycarbonate" option is still pretty interesting to me, independently of what @AnisGitHub will tell us. I'm afraid I'll need to get out now and might be back late, but let's discuss tomorrow, if it's ok for you.

I added some renders for proposals 2 & 3 in cfd427f

theoryshaw commented 9 years ago

Hey @yorikvanhavre Renderings look great. A couple comments in the images below.

Also, is it possible to get an interior rendering with the viewer in the northeast corner of the 2-storyspace, looking south and southwest?

can you use the following textures... https://github.com/OpeningDesign/Sports_Complex/tree/master/Models/Proposal%202/textures texture_fiber_cement.png (for exterior) texture_vertical_plywood.png (for interior) ... see this commit for locations of materials on the inside/outside.

Can you meet tomorrow morning? 9a CST?

Thanks.

@theoryshaw & @yorikvanhavre Please let me know if you want me to join the meeting.

Looks great guys. I don't want to distract you from your deadline, but I thought I'd add a couple of notes:

  1. It looks like the Polycarbonate can handle snowloads to a certain extent per the literature. I'm curious if there are any buildings in the area with this type of pitch. Greenhouses come to mind, but they generally have steeper pitches. I love the idea of a daylit ceiling. I just haven't seen it done locally. Also, will it pass commcheck or a similar energy modeling tool with the low r value?
  2. Is this structural type pretty economical? My first thought was that open webs could feel lighter up at the roof, but I have to say this form is growing on me.
  3. I was just curious if Todd had ever discussed running the track completely around the open floor plan to include the area around the basketball courts. This would provide a longer track. Perhaps, it's more important to separate the functions.
  4. Lastly, I'm wondering if you might need more direct exiting out of the large double height volume to the north. I recently sat in a code seminar where they talked about egress loads based on the worst case scenario, such as a tournament with fans, etc. This could certainly be worked out later.
Let me know if you'd like me to look into any of these things. Great work!

One other thought. This building will look sweet from the bypass highway at night when the polycarbonate is lit from within!

Thanks for the comments guys! Fine for me at 9h CST @theoryshaw

theoryshaw commented 9 years ago

Thanks @dottkamm. Good questions/comments...

It looks like the Polycarbonate can handle snowloads to a certain extent per the literature. I'm curious if there are any buildings in the area with this type of pitch. Greenhouses come to mind, but they generally have steeper pitches.

Per the acroPLUS literature, the 626 product works on slopes 5% or greater.

I love the idea of a daylit ceiling. I just haven't seen it done locally. Also, will it pass commcheck or a similar energy modeling tool with the low r value?

Yes, good question, @AnisGitHub will help us dial into that. https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=363382643

Is this structural type pretty economical? My first thought was that open webs could feel lighter up at the roof, but I have to say this form is growing on me.

From my research and talking to others, this rigid frame approach is the most ecomonical. Just found out that http://www.foremostbuildings.com/ is on board and will, i'm sure, help us dial into that economy.

I was just curious if Todd had ever discussed running the track completely around the open floor plan to include the area around the basketball courts. This would provide a longer track. Perhaps, it's more important to separate the functions.

Yes, actually suggested that as well. He'd like a guardrail on the inside side of the track, so if it went around the basketball courts, it would infringe on the buffer space. They're looking at using a net between the track and courts as well.

Lastly, I'm wondering if you might need more direct exiting out of the large double height volume to the north. I recently sat in a code seminar where they talked about egress loads based on the worst case scenario, such as a tournament with fans, etc. This could certainly be worked out later.

Still waiting on pricing back from http://www.midlandplastics.com/ on the http://gallinausa.com/ products.

If you'd like, to get a different budgetary angle on this, perhaps you call these guys: http://www.ameriluxinternational.com/ Perhaps shoot them these PDFs and see what type of ballparks they can provide.

@theoryshaw & @yorikvanhavre do you think it will be possible achieve a close look to the "all polycarbonate" option by using spandrel glass? That should help with the thermal performance, daylighting and aesthetics.

We should try to keep the west and east openings to a minimum while increasing opening areas on the south facade.

Also for the larger spaces, e.g. the two story space, daylighting should ideally come from two or more different sources to improve daylighting quality and uniformity. Unit skylights should be considered for this space. spandrel glass

theoryshaw commented 9 years ago

yeah, unfortunately we don't have the budget for spandel glass.

The budget for this is a scooch above (if that) a budget for a wearhouse. ~$50/sf.

btw... owner/sub meeting is this Thursday. I should have more direction after that.

AnisGitHub commented 9 years ago

Thanks for clarifying @theoryshaw .

New renders of proposal 2: 8a6ebdf

dottkamm commented 9 years ago

I was just looking at the 2013 RSMeans square foot costs. A 40,000 sf warehouse with a steel frame and metal sandwich panels for exterior walls costs about $104.10 per sf. Removing the contractor fees and the design fees comes to about $70 per sf. It would be good to know what is all included in the $50/ sf number, so we can keep the design within budget.

theoryshaw commented 9 years ago

Yes, I've let the GC/Owner know that this is number is a little unrealistic. Nonetheless a 'cost effective' approach is something we need to address.

theoryshaw commented 9 years ago

Hey guys, @yorikvanhavre @AnisGitHub @dottkamm Had a great meeting with the owner/gc/subs yesterday.

Will followup with more details, just wanted to say thanks for the work thus far.

@AnisGitHub Next week is go time. ;)

Have a good weekend guys!

theoryshaw commented 9 years ago

Sorry, @AnisGitHub apparently it's not 'go time' this week. ;)

I'm getting buried by owner requested plan changes. Will let you know when things start settling down to make efficient use of your time. Sorry for the shift in schedule.

AnisGitHub commented 9 years ago

Thank you for the update @theoryshaw . Please let me know if you have any questions in the mean time.
