Thanks for a great first session last Wednesday. Thank you to Julie Lowndes for guest teaching about Better Science in Less Time! Our team commented how engaged everyone was, especially in the Google Docs, and heard recurring themes of organization, standardization and collaboration. Below is a light digest of Call 1, including a reminder for your Seaside (or Riverside 😉) Chat and instructions on beginning your pathways. Looking forward to seeing you then!
Have a good week,
Tina, Devan, Corey, and Anna

Slack -- Use this link to join the Openscapes Slack Organization so that you can connect further with the Openscapes Community. If you decide to join, please introduce yourselves in the welcome channel! The link expires on September 18th, so if you wish to join after this date let Corey or Anna know.
Goals: We started working towards a common understanding of the Openscapes mindset and what your pathway forward looks like for your team. We also highlighted an overarching goal for improved data transparency.
Task for next time:
Have a Seaside Chat with your team and reflect on Cohort Call 1.
Begin to think about your Pathway.
Talk with your team about how you want to document your Pathway. Focus on where you are Now (your trailhead).
Note, teams can approach this differently. Maybe the team has one pathway or multiple.
What you're already doing aligning with the Openscapes Mindset:
Preparing our data for the public and anyone interested in using our data. It is important to document the processes I use to clean/transform the data and to be transparent with how I am providing the data. I want people to use our data and to not feel intimidated or unsure about what the data is and if it is good quality. +1+1
Data used is often public and meant to be public +1+1+1+1+1+1
Finding ways to use tools like CalEnviroScreen to integrate considerations about disadvantaged/underserved communities into our analyses+1+1
A lot of the work that I do is about translating complex science to different audiences as well as building anti-racist programs. This aligns with the openscapes mindset - but I am looking forward to doing better about joining that work with data science at large.+1 +1 !!
I make sure that all resources available online are accessible and easy to find, when I facilitate work group meetings or conduct outreach, i make sure all parties are notified to the best of my ability +1+1
What goals do you have for streamlining collaboration:
Do better about documenting how we do what we do - and make that as open and accessible to current and future collaborators so that we are all on the same page when it comes to getting our work done. +1+1+1+1
Being able to find the data I need and not having to “know that person” +10000!+1+1!!!!+1+1!!!!!
I want people to look at my stuff & not be intimidated that it’s in a space that is unfamiliar for them!+1+1+1+1+1♥️
Make it easier for others to re-use my work, and easier for collaborators to contribute to it+1+1+1
