Much of the web is moving to axe-core as a default accessibility testing framework.

Pa11y has an option of using this too. Could you leverage this https://github.com/pa11y/pa11y-runner-axe

axe-core is currently the only engine used by a11ygato.

Ok. That wasn't my understanding based on the description here https://github.com/Orange-OpenSource/a11ygato-platform which states that it is a fork of pa11y.

It is indeed historically a fork but there is (I think) not so much common ground between both projects nowadays. Merging them for instance would be probably impossible today. The fork was initiated a long time ago.
