Gimp is great in the works for me, like you say, haven't seen any flaw using
it, just in starting it, i.e., the same pop up error, while am using Windows XP
Pro x64, and fresh install of Gimp 2.8.

Sooo, is there a fix for this in the pipeline, or a way we can eliminate the
error message at start up?

I found two .dlls (C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin and C:\Program Files\GIMP
2\32\bin) and tried renaming them (all combinations thereof), but when the GIMP
2\bin file is renamed, GIMP gives this error message:
"The program can't start because libglib-2.0-0.dll is missing from your
computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

This issue is caused by the extension pack, to be specific the Animation
package.
Remove the pack and re install without selecting the Animation Package, which
is not selected to begin with.

Same issue; the short version to 'fix' it is to delete this EXE from the
indicated folder (the EXE name is in the title of your error; the location is
in the error message).
You'll not really notice that it is missing (you are only removing this single
plugin, and not all the animation pack plugins like #12's solution).

There are actually two versions of libglib-2.0-0.dll available in my Gimp/Gimp
Extensions installation on a Win7/64 system:
c:\Program Files\GIMP 2\32\bin\libglib-2.0-0.dll 1.158.985 27.11.2013 00:24 -a--
and:
c:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\libglib-2.0-0.dll 1.198.423 29.11.2013 23:03 -a--
The former being a 32bit-DLL featuring the function "g_get_home_dir_utf8" (see
attached "32bit-dll_2014-12-19_13-46-50.png").
The latter is a 64bit-DLL missing that function (see attached
"64bit-dll_2014-12-19_13-48-52.png").
I guess that on 64bit Windows environments the 64bit version is called rather
than the 32bit. But I have no clue how to workaround this problem...

I had the same issue on 64-bits. I uninstalled both gimp and the extensions.
I then ran the installs under Vista compatibility and it all works.
