I realised the answer to this one myself so I'm just recording in case anybody else wonders about it...

Under the Difficult Tiles heading there is a rule about requesting a number of assistants, each of whom will roll an extra dice. My question was: Why wouldn't a player request that every other available team member assist them?

The answer is that the total number rolled will be added to the Slime Score. This means that the ideal result is to get exactly the number needed to clear the tile, and no higher. Here's an example.

Suppose a player were to request, for example, two assistants to clear a tile with difficulty five. The average roll is 10.5 so that is the expected amount of addition to the Slime Score. If the player requested only one assistant, the average roll is 7 which is still enough to clear the tile and adds less to the Slime Score.

Yes, that's right.

Just to add - once the players have agreed who is going to assist, there's no backing out. If you ask for help defeating a 5 - and you roll a 6 - the other players still have to roll.
