Pedestal automation not working #666

I've tried both the shears and the bucket for milking cows and neither work even when the animals move right up against it.

I'm on 1.12.2

I no longer support 1.12.2, but you want to make sure that the pedestal you're using isn't the display only one and that the pedestal is also either switched on using the button on it or is provided redstone power so that it works.
