In the event of a data package removal, the data package DOI URL at DataCite is now set to the URL https://edirepository.org/data/tombstone. This URL, however, does not exist and returns an error message to the user. Minimally, this URL should resolve to a user-readable web page that states the data package has been permanently removed by the data package owner (aka the DOI tombstone page). Better, the tombstone page should display the DOI in question, along with the data package identifier and perhaps contact information for the user to follow up with additional questions.
