Namedbench does not appear to work with OS/X Mountain Lion - OS X 10.8 (12A256) Developer release #219

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Run as normal
2.completes the first portion - with no issues
3. Gets to "Waiting for wildcard cache queries from 22 servers, appears to hang
or slow down.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected outcome is for namedbench to complete and provide report -instead it
sits at the waiting for wildcard cache point.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

OS X 10.8 (12A256), NameBench 1.3.1

Please provide any additional information below.

Have tried it on several occasions with similar/same result - on same machine,
with os/x Lion - samve version Namebench works fine - no problems.

I have the some problem as #52 & #40, Fail: List index out of range.
I made the change to line 203.
Very frustrating to say the least.
Why no fix for this?

@ #53 - hello there. did you try ejecting the install dmg from your desktop as
mentioned in #42? eject it and delete it from your trash as well. then try to
run namebench. if worse comes to worse i would delete namebench all together
(and delete from trash too), redownload namebench and reinstall, eject the
install dmg from your desktop and trash, then go to comment #28 and go through
those steps. Hope i didn't confuse you and hope you get namebench to work for
you.

Source through terminal worked however

Followed all the instructions at #46 but it failed in the final "health check".
However I ran it a second time immediately and it worked. It would be
preferable if the code were updated for Mountain Lion.

Changing that line and saving it and running the application gives the error

Got the same problem here with OSX 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion).

I confirm that changing the line 203 as specified in comment #17 make it work.

After amending file line #203 had same error as #40 and #23.

Followed suggestions of #47 and #59 --- run using Alexa 200 instead of Safari
and it should complete without error.

Thank you for this.

I also am experiencing the "hang" at Waiting for wildcard cache queries." Would
it have anything to do with my modem being set up in bridge mode?

Original comment by mckempe...@gmail.com on 6 Jan 2013 at 6:51

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
@mckempe: Probably not. Reading the comments above, it seems like this is an
issue with the mac application. If you want to be sure, try the command line
version (see the wiki).

Hi,

Mine gets to "Sending 250 queries to 11 servers" and hangs at [53/2750], anyone
have any idea how I can fix this? It got past the "Waiting for wildcard cache
queries" after I changed line 203. This is massively frustrating as my internet
is failing to load the page like 50% of the time now so I'm desperate to get it
fixed! Thanks

Original comment by rthompso...@gmail.com on 7 Jan 2013 at 12:43

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
#17 fixed the wildcard cache problem.

Now it hangs at "Sending 250 queries to 11 servers". (See possible solution
below.)

The command line instructions in #14 and #15 worked. You need to download the
source code:

http://code.google.com/p/namebench/downloads/detail?name=namebench-1.3.1-source.
tgz&can=2&q=

NOTE: My *original* DNS was OPENDNS that I had manually entered some time ago.
After running the command line namebench, it recommended going back to COMCAST,
my ISP. Using the recommended DNS, I ran the GUI namebench on 10.8.2 again and
it completed.

i tried #17's solution, but ran into the same problem as #23. i am not
running namebench on a .dmg, and the solution proposed by #46 didn't help.
However, the solution from #59 did help. MB Air running 8.1.2, and namebench
1.3.1

I don't know enough about computers to change command lines in a program. How
about it gets fixed. It's not like 10.8.2 has only just come on stream.

For those still having problems after implementing the fix in #17, try this:

In System Preferences, Security & Privacy

1. Click the lock and authenticate
2. Write down your setting for "Allow applications downloaded from"
3. Change "Allow applications downloaded from:", to "Anywhere"
4. Click "Allow From Anywhere" in the confirmation box.
5. Close System Preference and run Namebench - it should complete successfully
now.

Important: After running and getting your report, go back into System
Preferences and change the "Allow Applications Downloaded From" back to where
it was.
