Register prototype AMIP datasets #11

Open durack1 opened 4 months ago

durack1 commented 4 months ago

@mzelinka just creating an issue as a placeholder for discussions in finalizing the registration of these prototype AMIP SST datasets. These will all be published against the input4MIPs mip_era CMIP6Plus target_mip CMIP - as per PCMDI-AMIP-1-1-9

@mzelinka, just circling around on these. We only plan to undertake sims from 1979 to near present, right? If yes, to simplify the data being published, truncating these 197901-202312 (or even up to 202403) could also be possible as the data are revised and prepared for publication.

Just registering these now (along with other new data) so wanted to catch these start-end dates

I think it would be useful to publish the full available length of all SST datasets. They are obviously going to be useful for the period prior to 1979, even if the AMIP runs start then. Or aren't you planning to make these publicly available?

Thanks @taylor13. The quirk here, is that data before a certain period is identical to the PCMDI-AMIP-1-1-9 data, and only some of the time period is overwritten with the data identified. So my goal here was to identify what is unique/new, and then hone into that. These are also the data that I had thought would be published to the target_mip = prototype/test or similar

Just circling around on the above, the decision discussed today was to focus on the period where E3SMv2 simulations are currently being run, so generate data covering the notional 1979-01-01 to present period, for the 3 unique datasets of interest. Following that, I will register the following datasets, and prepare these for publication within a couple of months, this will anchor the ability for E3SMv2 results to be reproduced across other modeling systems - with an expectation that future simulation campaigns post-August 2024 will be picking up the full 1850-2022 suite of new CMIP/DECK forcing datasets, and we can ascertain whether or not to continue extending these 3 datasets alongside these at that time.
