institution_id registration of SOCAT consortium/community #13

Closed m-p-t closed 6 years ago

Add providing institution for SOCAT data:

institution_id = SOCAT

SOCAT is a consortium/community of research groups with varying composition. Below are two suggestions for dealing with this fact:

Suggestion 1: institution = Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT), www.socat.info

Suggestion 2: institution = Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT). Project chair: Dorothee Bakker, Centre for Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ, UK

, or any combination or variant of the above as you see fit.

A related suggestion would be to add to the global attributes documentation either the encouragement to add "data steward(s)", "PI(s)", "data curator(s)", etc., to the comment field as appropriate, or to add any of these as a new optional global attribute?

@taylor13 @gleckler1 @JimBiardCics @m-p-t let's start a dialogue on this.. I'm not sure how best to proceed with this case

taylor13 commented 7 years ago

@durack1 @gleckler1 @JimBiardCics @m-p-t It's not critical what information is provided by "institution". the suggestions I think are good ones (or you could include www.socat.info in the second one since presumably Dorothee won't remain project chair forever. We just want folks using the data to have some idea what institution_id stands for since "SOCAT" may not be familiar to everyone. So, for example, you might even elect to use:

institution = Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) is an evolving consortium/community of research groups. See www.socat.info.

@m-p-t @durack1 @JimBiardCics @taylor13 A possibility that some of discussed today was to have at least two identifiers, giving the opportunity to identify a possible data expert(s), curator (not always the same as the expert POC), and possible technical contact (a third party producing the CMORized data). Or, as MT suggested above, possibly recommend a way to describe some or all of this information (situation dependent) in a comment

taylor13 commented 7 years ago

there is an optional global attribute called for by CMIP6 (as in CMIP5), which is "contact". All information about contacts I think could be placed there, indicating which contact is responsible for what. I don't think "contact" information would normally appear under "institution", so perhaps the original "Suggestion 2" above is not a good one. Again the essential thing for institution is to define the acronym that appears in "institution_id", so the phrase "Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) is necessary and perhaps sufficient.

@m-p-t is the SOCAT registration still required?

durack1 commented 6 years ago

@m-p-t it's been a number of months since we last heard from you, and we're trying to clean things up and finalize the specifications. I do hope that SOCAT data is still planned to be contributed to the project, however I'll close this issue, and you can reopen if/when registration is required
