Recommendation 57
NASA should also consider how the relatively nascent planetary
ML/AI/AA user community might not be well-aligned with traditional missions, funding
opportunities, and user groups and the impact that might have on potential respondents to
funding calls.
PDS is actively engaged in the International Planetary Data Alliance (IPDA) to refine the PDS4 standard, establish in-common standards for scientific planetary data management, development of tools and training.
Several nodes are actively engaged with AI / ML researchers who are using their data. PDS nodes are actively improving product usability by enhancing metadata and improving product selection criteria for automated access to data. For example RMS and IMG now analyze image products to segment and classify pixels, thereby augmenting and enhancing the associated metadata.
Recommendation 57 NASA should also consider how the relatively nascent planetary ML/AI/AA user community might not be well-aligned with traditional missions, funding opportunities, and user groups and the impact that might have on potential respondents to funding calls.
