No, it wasn't. However, it makes sense to add checkers to NGAME.

The version of this file in its-vault has junk at the end, which is the tail end of the Tech 2 chess source - identical to RG; CHESS2 614 except for the CHEOPS includes.

Jonathan Schaeffer's "One Jump Ahead", about the development of the Chinook checkers engine, has a chapter on the history of AI checkers players. MIT-AI isn't mentioned, but the general idea is that checkers wasn't thought to be an interesting game to work on in the 1970s.
