A timestamped journaling system— creates a field journal for them. Definitely understood by any anthropologist. Basically the same as a memo, but semantically very different and they think of it very different— basically field notes are active live notes, and Memo is a thoughtful reflection.
Field note is an artifact type.
(Not used as much in STS infrastructures because it is less a research site)
If we collapse it into one artifact it may matter less that text artifact is separate from field note.
Is it possible to choose a different title for a field note? Yes. It is pre-filled in with the date and time.
Made field notes artifacts primarily because we wanted all the annotation to work. But it is also semantically an artifact.
