Create new Species Threats and Recommendations Database #33

Open Anna-Johnson opened 5 years ago

Create a new database (likely constructed in Excel but transferred over to SQLite) that holds ELCODE level information that can be extracted to populate NHA report sections.

Suggested Fields for database: --ELCODE --Family --Genus --Species --Display Name (in species table) --Common Name --Threats --Recommendations --General Ecology --Fun Facts --Threats Citations --Recommendations Citations --General Ecology Citations --Fun Facts Citations

Formatting information: within each cell (e.g. Threats), I think we can have multiple sentences/sentence fragments, but we should divide really different ideas with semi-colons. In the corresponding "citations" cell, suggest we just have the (author, date) citation format (which must correspond to a full citation held within the Zotero database), and again, divide by semi-colons the citations that go with differing information sections.

For example: Threats: This species is susceptible to competition from invasive plants; This species is intolerant of deer browsing. Threats Citations: (Author, 1993); (Author, 2006)

This database will be a combination of pulling together information that already exists in a bunch of places already and also creating new information. Species/communities to focus on developing this info should be prioritized by how often they appear in NHA reports. Also, no need to fill all columns for all species, and not everything has to have a corresponding citation, although that would be nice.

We had also talked about wanting to align threats/recommendations we highlight with the IUCN categories: eg. Salafsky et al. 2007

Still not sure how to do this, but I do think it is a good idea!

Regarding Salafsky et al, I think the intent was to have the threat category listed in a cell in the database row for each threat. For example, if there is a threat about a gas well, we would use enter "3.1 oil and gas drilling" in a field in that row.
