Revised, most comments raised by the 3rd reviewer were addressed.
There was a lot going on here. I think that the manuscript could be helped along by either a call-out box or a conceptual figure that indicates not only what data streams were considered and where they were from, but which analyses they were used in. (Figure S1).
Aggregation of the data. It was unclear to me how decisions were made on how to sum seasonal data to an annual period, as well as how biomes were assigned to the data, and how the partitioning method was aggregated?
Spatial product. I understand that the authors are indicating this method is an improvement over previous methods in terms of uncertainty and variation explained. However, there is still quite a lot of unexplained variation, and yet I suspect that folks will take this map product and run with it without worrying about that. Is there a way to more properly present the uncertainty associated with the map, either by biome or for the entire land surface? (See also lines 371-372).
Line 76: Stable isotopes have also been used (see Jastrow and other work in FACE experiments) -- could not find the references mentioned.
