This is something for someone with a bit of Unix unstallation / administration fu:
The unix folder in our repo is littered with various files of poorly - if at all - documented purpose, presumably poor maintenance status, and also unknown status as to whether they might actually be entirely obsolete. Someone should go through those with a fine-toothed comb and:
Identify what they would originally have been used for.
Make recommendations which ones to keep and which ones to ditch for good (keeping in mind that we want to continue supporting a wider variety of Unix-ish operating systems than just GNU/Linux, FreeBSD and macOS).
Make recommendations how to get them back up to snuff if they could still be of use.
The following files seem to warrant looking into in particular:

(minus unix/icons/source/*, which we probably want to keep around for now)
