Because pr2_etherCAT now supports a wider variety of devices, it possible a device is installed on a robot whose ethercat_hardware plugin is not part of the normal PR2 ROS install. Thus, for users without a special ROS overlay, the robot would become unmovable.
It may be a better to allow pr2_etherCAT to come up with generic driver for unrecognized device. The generic driver would provide diagnostic warnings and information about unknown device.
