This is complex as most data has been published to the ESGF. However, the original copies of some files have been replaced and so working out what can be deleted is not completely trivial. Also, the original files that were uploaded are stored on tape, but fixes (generally just metadata fixes) were applied before they were published to the ESGF. If it's later discovered that any of the fixes went wrong then the copy in the elastic tape is useful to fix this. I don't know how long to keep the copy for. We could also say that it's just tough luck now if an error's discovered. The producing institutes should also have a copy.
There is a small amount of extra data in elastic tape that's users intermediate files that have been archived. These batches are documented in the trac wiki.
