remove timing from example.py #96

@andersonfrailey, this removes the timing diagnostics from example.py and makes a few other small changes. If you'd rather I keep the timing diagnostics or copy them to an example_timing.py or similar script, please let me know.

Thanks for the PR, @MattHJensen. I see no need to keep the timing diagnostics in the example. A curious user can add them to their own code if they'd like. Merging.
