Improve error handling #10

Related to #9

As detailed in this ticket, the error handling when the BLDSS API returns an error isn't great. Currently the user just gets an "Internal server error".

We should improve the error handling so the user has something useful to report and doesn't leave them stranded

Looking into this, it seems that we generally need to address the number of places where we just die rather than doing something sensible. This situation has been around since day one, so it would be good to improve things.
