Closing this pr for the time being. I think having your own independent converter is much better since:

we can convert to many values, rather than relying sparingly on server-side
we are confident that the models contain concrete default units of measure for further conversion to other units of measure
implementing such also means implementing a separate "state of the units of measurement used for that model" in each of the models

I am closing this pr and opening #16 for discussion.
