Build guide #1

Open alejoar opened 4 months ago

alejoar commented 4 months ago

I love this keyboard's features and key distribution.

I'm coming from a Kyria and I have been looking at the Hillside 48 for a while, but I wouldn't bite because of the missing features. The Cardinal seems to be all I wanted! Amazing job.

When can we expect the build guide to be completed?

Painterman commented 4 months ago

Probably next week, i'm still getting around to make a 3d printed case for it so it migth take a bit longer.

In the meantime the important thing to keep in mind when building one is to bridge the pads on the backside and the polarity of the battery connector, you could use any connector you want as long as it has a 1,5mm pich.

alejoar commented 4 months ago

Thank you @Painterman

I will hold off for now until I'm confident I can build this. The "bridging the pads" kind stuff is what prevents me from just ordering the PCB until there's proper building documentation.

Looking forward to it, thank you for the amazing work :)

alejoar commented 2 months ago

@Painterman any chance of getting the docs any time soon? Apologies for asking, just very excited to build this keyboard!

Painterman commented 2 months ago

Hi @alejoar

I'm sorry for the delay, the wiki/build guide should be up and finished, i dont go into a lot of detail, i assume you know how to solder and such, if you don't please look up other better tutorials online first. Here's a direct link: https://github.com/Painterman/Cardinal/wiki/Introduction

Next is the 3d printed case, as i have been learning diferent cad programs and still getting around to it.

alejoar commented 2 months ago

@Painterman amazing, thank you!

What PCB printing service did you use? This is my first time printing a PCB.

Also would appreciate some guidelines for the PCB request. E.g. this is what it looks like by default (except for the color) in jlcpcb.com

Should I change anything?

Painterman commented 2 months ago

That is perfect, you could change the surface finish to leadfree if you wanted, up to you, for mine i did.

alejoar commented 1 month ago

@Painterman I think I have almost all my parts!

I have a couple questions though:

  1. For socketing the controller what sockets did you buy? I bought these thinking that the male sockets that came with the controller would fit buy they don't :(

I guess I messed up and should have also bought the pins!

  1. What is the exact battery connector you are using? I bought a couple but I think they are too large. A link would be appreciated.
Painterman commented 1 month ago

If you don't have the pins you could also use led legs, they should fit, test then first tho. Other common replacement is led strip connectors without the plastic insulator like these (https://es.aliexpress.com/item/32874875228.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.main.91.3d72CMPACMPAjV&algo_pvid=933612cb-9c46-4fbe-8e6b-77771f7886a1&algo_exp_id=933612cb-9c46-4fbe-8e6b-77771f7886a1-45&pdp_npi=4%40dis%21EUR%211.15%211.15%21%21%211.21%211.21%21%402103835c17148463453082358e40ee%2165602872373%21sea%21ES%21880911259%21&curPageLogUid=1i0CkSanG78S&utparam-url=scene%3Asearch%7Cquery_from%3A)

For connectors you could use any as long as fits the 1.5mm pitch, there should be plenty of space for then around, be mindfull of the polarity of the connector, positive is the lower pin. i did use jst zh (https://es.aliexpress.com/item/1005002096347570.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.110.adb7194d3HAuPN&gatewayAdapt=glo2esp) because i had then liying around, but if you have other connectors and they fit go ahead, the jst ph should also fit (2mm pitch) and they are also pretty common.

Hope it helps

alejoar commented 1 month ago

Oh wow, do those led strip connectors fit the mill max sockets? If so I'm definitely getting a bunch of those, much cheaper than ordering pins.

For the connector, is the 2Pin/curved needle one the right one?

Thank you so much for your answer @Painterman !

Painterman commented 1 month ago

Yes, the curved ones.

alejoar commented 1 month ago

@Painterman quick question: I can't figure where the reset button is supposed to be soldered to. I've been looking at the pictures but can't find it. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Painterman commented 1 month ago

Hi, its not marked, but its these 2 pads on the pcb, you can solder on either side of it, i did on the top side.

Have a great day!
