I've been thinking about this, and I think for STEPPS they are the same thing when the dispersal kernel is isometric. This is in part because we do not account for the size of the depositional basin - they are just taken to be point locations.

So, should I change the wording in the paper? I'm leaving it as is for now, but it's something to think about.

Left it as is. They are different concepts, and I don't want to confuse them. Closing the issue.
