PR to merge the large refactor on latest onto master.

Hold off on this as we need to setup Heroku to work with master. Feel free to leave the PR open, just don't accept/merge it.

Is there a TL:DR of everything in this PR?

There is not, but the changes are drastic enough that writing a comparison would actually be longer than writing how the new one works. I'll work on that in time.
