Task Overview

We need your help translating our Quickstart guide from English to other top languages spoken around the world. This task is written with first-time contributors and Outreachy applicants in mind and includes detailed instructions on how to complete this task. Adding translations will help expand our open-source community and increase the adoption of Parsl worldwide.

For this task, we will use Google Docs and Google Drive – free collaborative tools available to Gmail accounts. This is a collaborative writing task where contributors work together to ensure the translation is accurate and up-to-date.

How to Complete this Task

  1. Sign into your Google account

  2. Go to our Quickstart Translations folder. Check and see if there is already an existing document in the language you are planning to contribute to.

    • If there is NOT an existing document, proceed with the next step.
    • If there IS an existing document in that language, double-click it to access the doc. Go to step 7 in these instructions.
  3. Locate the “Quickstart Guide Template” doc in the folder

  4. You will see three vertical docs on the far right side of the doc – click on it to expand a dropdown menu. Select “Make a copy” – this will create a copy of the template within this folder. View this screenshot for reference. You will only be able to make a copy if you are signed into a Google account.

  5. Double-click on your copy doc titled “Copy of Quickstart Guide Template” to open the document in a separate window/tab.

  6. While in the Google Doc, rename the document by clicking on the name in the top left corner of the Google Doc using this naming convention: Language_Quickstart Guide-xx (xx is placeholder text for the two-letter language code, which can be found here: https://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_language_codes.asp). For example, for the Vietnamese translation, the doc should be renamed Vietnamese_Quickstart Guide-vi.

  7. Go to the “Contributors” section toward the end of the document. You will find a table where you can add your details. If all the rows are full, go to the last row and right-click it to “insert row below” – a new row will appear.

  8. Return to this GitHub task. Add a comment that you are working on translating the Language_Quickstart Guide-xx (insert correct document name), share what you are doing (i.e. writing, reviewing, and post the link to the Google Doc you’re working on.

  9. Now, you can help translate the document. Do not translate the code snippets (in yellow-green boxes); only translate the instructions and information text.

  10. Go back to the “Contributors” section within the Google Doc and add a brief description of what you did to contribute.

Thank you, everyone, for your excitement about contributing to this guide! I want to note a couple of things: contributors should select a language they are comfortable with. Please do not run excerpts through a translator app or program in a language you are unfamiliar with and cannot maintain. There isn't a great way for me to verify whether a translation is accurate, so I need the community to collaborate and check each other's work. Remember to follow the instructions I outlined above and log your contribution at the end of the document.

I will be reviewing items over the next couple of weeks.

@MundiaNderi, the only restriction we have is translating it to one of the top languages spoken around the world – please refer to the link provided above. The Quickstart Translation Google Drive folder is the development/collaborative workspace for contributors who are familiar with the selected language to translate the guide together. Please make sure you are reading the instructions above carefully as it details the entire process. With your interest in translating it to Deutsch/German, there is already an existing German translation doc created by @nawarajshah and you can contribute to it here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JoTBpdw2XIPYp0nUmmTawYQDB3QwjCHrDG4PspidQBI/edit#heading=h.aa4rmczcl6m5. I hope that helps!
