Keyboard inputs create specific effects under the mouse pointer E.g. x creates large explosion Allows easier and faster effect creation.

Maybe numpad keys?

we were talking about this recently, will expand the idea with the a assignable quick-key solution

basic idea being having some reserved hotkeys (maybe numpad keys or something) that can have effects assigned to them by the user, similar to how you can assign groups of units to the number keys with ctrl+number

allows more flexibility and makes things easier to scale if we end up adding many more effects
