"For Arduino IDE compatibility we should just go with FT231X (cheaper version of FT232RL) + Atmega328p combination even though it won't be a most cost optimal. In total those two will reach almost the price of Atmega32u4 but it is a trusted solution." - Ihsan

That would be pretty expensive. I'd rather lose Arduino IDE compatibility than use an FTDI chip.

We will not use and FTDI chip.
