Use the shared core #10

It would be good to use as much of the shared core as possible. This includes making sure more of my setup goes 'upstream'.

Having investigated in more depth, I think the shared core is incompatible with the base of this pack - the former should be complete in itself, while I prefer to pull in and create a variety of components as late as possible to ease updates.
