CPAN failing to install modules\, including LWP. Looks like it might occur when primary site is busy\, since it takes a long time. from what i see from the output\, 2 sites are being tried: one ftp\, one http

for some reason (i can't see that from the output)\, the ftp server errors. next\, it will try the http mirror. but since you do not have LWP installed\, the only alternative for CPAN.pm is to use lynx.

the trouble lies with the http mirror actually. when following that link\, we get to a sourceforge html page\, which says: [ The download should start in 3 seconds. If it does not\, please click here. ]

and i'm suspecting lynx isn't very charmed of that.

as a fix to your problem\, i suggest adding more server to your urilist in your CPAN::Config\, to minimize the chances of this happening.

as a note to p5p and especially those that know about CPAN mirrors: are there any rules to how a CPAN mirror should be set up? it seems that the way sourceforge.net does it will confuse quite a few programs...

regards\,

From jim@dew.com

Installing LWP solved the problem. However\, LWP installation was not smooth either. I'm going to be doing another Mandrake 8.2 box very soon (or perhaps I'll trade up to Suse). I'm going to make a bunch of notes on all the extra install things that need to be done.

I realize this is a little off topic\, but\, there are a number of modules with pre-requisites which are not satisfied and not resolved by their CPAN installation. Also\, there are external prerequisites\, such as graphviz for the Graphviz modules\, which currently must be downloaded and installed manually\, severly limiting the usefullness of CPAN. Also\, the PDL stuff compiles and installs correctly\, but\, the CPAN installation is only a partial install. There are "optional" external packages which suffer from the same problem as Graphviz.

And then there's Tk\, where most of the truly usefull stuff isn't automated through CPAN module\, but\, is on the CPAN list of modules page\, which I'm assuming is some sort of "extra" page for people who didn't submit to CPAN properly or something. Right now\, Tk::* is a lot of work.

If I put together a nice list of what actually needs to be done to automate these installations\, is there somewhere I could send it? Some of the fixes need to go to module authors and some\, possibly\, to CPAN itself.

From @ask

It looks like this issue was caused by the sourceforge CPAN mirror being broken\, no?

If not\, then it's a CPAN.pm issue and would probably be better reported at http://rt.cpan.org/ :-)
