I am simply getting the following error issuing "make"

root:/usr/src/perl-5.8.8# make makefile:954: *** missing separator. Stop.

I issued the following command to configure:

If you compile perl5 on a different machine or from a different object directory\, copy the Policy.sh file from this object directory to the new one before you run Configure -- this will help you with most of the policy defaults.

Of course that's 'makefile' (small 'm')\, not Makefile (capital 'M'). That's probably just at the beginning of the automatic dependencies. It's possible that it's some gcc stuff (like \<command-line>) that can simply be deleted.

OK\, two things. First\, can you please send the output of

./myconfig

from the script in your Perl source directory.

Second\, can you please show us what is in your Makefile around line 954?

Of course that's 'makefile' (small 'm')\, not Makefile (capital 'M'). That's probably just at the beginning of the automatic dependencies. It's possible that it's some gcc stuff (like \<command-line>) that can simply be deleted.

Does your system have a /dev/null that is a character special file? That is\, does the following shell test work:

  test -c /dev/null && echo Ok

I recall one report a few years ago where this turned out to be the culprit.

You are correct and have a great memory. The /dev/null is a file and not a device. I have made the change and am rebuilding. I will repost with the results.

From john.gnew@verizon.net

Correcting /dev/null corrected the problem.

Now all I need to figure out it the test error for lib/Net/hostent Failed test gethostbyaddr('127.0.0.1') but that is a different problem.

Thanks for helping John
