Units for other cultures #31

While not a major priority for this release, troops should be added for other cultures and nations, such as Roman Kingdom, Republic and early Empire troops. Troops for Celts, Iberians, Illyrians, Dacians, Thracians (in each case separate, as much as possible). Troops for Carthage, Egypt, and the other nations in that region (at least three separate groups). Troops for Chinese states, which should be of more than one group (I.e. There would be separate troops for Tibetans, and for both North and South China). Troops for India, which would again be of different types. The cultural gap between Dravidians and Aryans should be simulated in their units, with perhaps a third group for nations around the Bengal. As the map is extended, troops for various native American nations will need to be made. Finally, Japan should have at least separate troops for Wajin and Ainu. As I said, these won't need to be made for a while, but I think we should at least plan, get some ideas together and maybe create some of them.

At least Thracians won't need their own units. The Peltasts were actually Thracian units adopted by the Greeks slightly before Alexander. Similarily the Thracians had mostly adopted Greek troops. For Illyrians and Dacians there's little information about the troops they used, so going with Peltasts for them as well is probably the best option. In addition to the Peltast you could add Falx swordsmen to at least Dacians. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falx

I would rather do solid research and give them as many troops as possible. Also, even the Hellenised troops I would make slightly different. Regarding unit descriptions, were they removed? They no longer show for me ingame. On 22 Aug 2015 13:33, "qweytr" notifications@github.com wrote:

Crossbowmen could be a Chinese special unit, as the crossbow wasn't widely used elsewhere until later. Other than that, they could use generic chariots and iron swordsmen. The Yue probably still used bronze swords and composite bowmen and should have separate units from the more advanced Chinese.

For Indians I can't find any specific units apart from the war elephants. Some generic archers and spearmen would probably do for infantry. I see no reason to differentiate the Indian units between regions.

It would be enough to translate some terms into the local languages. Also, regarding unit descriptions? On 22 Aug 2015 13:43, "qweytr" notifications@github.com wrote:

All unit names should be in English. I don't know about the descriptions.

PhelanBavaria commented 8 years ago

I think it would be cool to include the unit name in the native language (if known) as the first line of the description. I'll do the units for the Celts and Iberians very soon.

PhelanBavaria commented 8 years ago

I have created a unit "Freemen" for all Celts, Iberians, Balkans and Barbarians

qweytr commented 8 years ago

I'm closing this one, as there's now a new issue for units.
