I thought about #15 and got the idea to simply show an image icon with the number of images next to it instead (only displayed if there are more than 1 images). It is placed in the top right corner of the ImageView which also takes less visual space away than having the Chip beneath.
Additionally in the EditActivity you can see which position of the images you are currently looking at:
